About

I’ve been using credit cards for years, and the cards themselves have come and gone. Some cards are forced into discontinuation because the benefits are just too good and the bank loses money. Others are discontinued because too few people use them and they simply aren’t attractive anymore. In addition, if it’s a co-branded credit card, the card can also be discontinued when the partnership ends. This article rounds up the credit cards that have already been discontinued, partly as a keepsake. It’s worth noting that Chase has relatively few discontinued cards (unless a co-brand partnership ends), so it’s probably the most stable credit card issuer in terms of product lineup.

That said, even a discontinued card may still be obtainable. Here we’ll also separately list cards that are discontinued but can still be acquired through a product change. If you find that useful, you may still be able to get them indirectly!

Discontinued Cards (Still Obtainable)

Chase Ritz-Carlton Credit Card

Although this card has already been discontinued, you can still get it by product changing from Chase Marriott. You need a credit limit above $10,000, and you can only do the product change after holding the card for one year. Just call customer service or send a secure message. The biggest perk of this card is an annual 85,000-point free night certificate, plus a $300 airline incidental credit (in practice, related purchases can usually be reimbursed through a secure message), as well as free Priority Pass, while the annual fee is only $450. In other words, as long as you can fully use all three benefits, this is a card with a clearly negative annual fee and can be held long term. The value is even higher than Chase Marriott!

AMEX Marriott Bonvoy Credit Card

Although this card has been discontinued, you can still get it by product changing from AMEX Marriott Brilliant Card. The annual fee is only $95, but it comes with a 35,000-point free night certificate, so it’s still worth holding long term. You can think of it as a temporary parking spot, and later upgrade when you need Marriott Brilliant to get Marriott Platinum.

Citi Custom Cash

This card is still available to apply for right now, or you can product change from other Citi cards, so if you want one, act fast! For existing cardholders, this card will continue to be kept, and we still don’t know whether it will disappear in the future. From my perspective, this card is really a bit too easy to use—it’s basically an automatic 5% cash back every month, with no annual fee, and you can even hold multiple cards through product changes. No wonder Citi feels it can’t make money on it and wants to stop new applications.

BofA Spirit Credit Card

Bank of America is notifying existing Spirit Airlines co-branded credit cardholders that their accounts will be automatically converted to the no-annual-fee Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards credit card. Of course, the main reason is still that Spirit has stopped operating, so the card is gone too.

AMEX Green (July)

  • This card has quietly been removed from the official website, and the application link is dead too. I expect AMEX will make changes to this card, since compared with AMEX GoldPlatinum, this card just doesn’t have much of a reason to exist. Hopefully it can be changed into a no-annual-fee card, giving everyone a no-fee option for transferable points.

Deserve Edu

  • This used to be a great card that you could apply for without an SSN as long as you had a visa, and it was especially friendly for international students. Unfortunately, it has gradually become impossible to keep offering it.

Deserve Edu Credit Card

No annual fee; can apply without an SSN!

  • Welcome bonus: N/A
  • Rewards: 1% on all purchases
  • Redemption: Redeem directly
  • Annual fee: $0

Citi Rewards+

  • Most people used this card for small purchases, the round up rewards, and the 10% points rebate on redemptions each year. I guess Citi wasn’t making money on it, so it was forced into discontinuation.

Citi Rewards+ Credit Card

No annual fee! Best paired with other Citi TYP credit cards

US Bank Altitude Reserve

The legendary Apple Pay card of its era has finally fallen, and the reimbursement process is now more cumbersome! There had long been rumors that transfer partners would be added, but nothing ever materialized.

US Bank Altitude Reserve Credit Card

A premium travel card with up to $325 in annual travel credits! Earn 3x on travel and mobile wallet purchases!

  • Welcome bonus: 50,000 points (spend $4,500 in 3 months)
  • Rewards: 3x on travel (airfare, hotels, car rentals, etc.) and mobile wallet purchases, 1x on all other purchases
  • Redemption: Redeem for travel at 1.5 cents per point, or 1 cent per point for cash back
  • Annual fee: $400
  • Apply now>>

AMEX Everyday Card

  • As a no-annual-fee card that can earn transferable points, this card was still pretty good. But the big problem is that its earning power is really a bit weak, and to get multipliers you still have to make 20 purchases per month, which is a hassle. Its benefits also aren’t especially distinctive, and even the supermarket earning rate has a cap.
  • Existing cardholders can still keep it, and it can be product changed back and forth with Everyday Preferred.

AMEX EveryDay Credit Card

2.4x points at supermarkets; no annual fee!

  • Welcome bonus: 10,000 Membership Rewards (spend $1,000 in 3 months)
  • Rewards: Up to 2.4x at supermarkets, up to 1.2x on other purchases (requires 20+ purchases per month)
  • Redemption: Redeem for gift cards, cash, and travel; best value when transferred to airline miles
  • Annual fee: $0
  • Apply now>>

AMEX Everyday Preferred

  • This card has a $99 annual fee, but what you get in return is only up to 3x at supermarkets. If you want the extra bonus, you also need to make 30 purchases per month. This kind of rewards structure really feels out of step with today’s market. These days it’s all about statement credits and high rewards rates—cards that catch your eye because they have clear, standout features.
  • Existing cardholders can still keep it, and it can be product changed back and forth with Everyday.

AMEX EveryDay Preferred Credit Card

A great grocery card: 4.5x at supermarkets, 3x at gas stations, and 1.5x on all other purchases!

  • Welcome bonus: 15,000-30,000 Membership Rewards (spend $2,000 in 3 months) [Need to use browser incognito mode to check]
  • Rewards: 4.5x at supermarkets, 3x at gas stations, and 1.5x on all other purchases (with 30 or more transactions per month); otherwise 3x, 2x, and 1x
  • Redemption: Points can be redeemed for gift cards, cash, or travel; transferring to airline miles offers the best value
  • Annual fee: $95
  • Apply now>>

AMEX Cash Magnent

  • This card really has no competitive edge at all, with only 1.5% cash back. Citi Double Cash is the straight-up 2% replacement.

AMEX Cash Magnet Credit Card

1.5% cash back on all purchases; no annual fee

  • Rewards: 1.5% cash back on all purchases
  • Redemption: Redeem for cash
  • Annual fee: $0

BofA Better Balance Rewards

On May 16, this card was forcibly converted to BofA Unlimited Cash Rewards. It’s a no-annual-fee card that effectively gives you over $100 a year in value, and it really became a sock-drawer card for long-term holding.

Wells Fargo Propel

After being discontinued, it was converted into Autograph.

Wells Fargo Propel Credit Card

3x on dining, gas, and travel; no annual fee!

  • Welcome bonus: 20,000 points (spend $1,000 in three months)

Citi Expedia Series

US Bank Radisson Rewards Premier

  • Cardholders have already received letters, and this card will be forcibly converted to the US Bank Altitude Go credit card in May 2022. I’m guessing the contract between US Bank and Radisson expired and wasn’t renewed.

US Bank Radisson Premier Credit Card

40k points every year

  • Welcome bonus: 50,000 points (one purchase) + 35,000 (spend $2,500 within 90 days)
