April 2026 update: This card will convert to Citi on the 24th and will automatically receive Citi card benefits. Starting on the 27th, you can create an online account with Citi. From the 24th to the 26th, you will not be able to log in on the Barclays website, so make sure your address is correct, or your new card may not arrive. It is still unclear whether this kind of conversion will count as a new account, but it probably will. If you do not want to take the risk of going over 5/24, you can close the card in advance. Presumably Barclays would not claw back a welcome bonus earned within the first year.

Citi quietly posted a notice on its website that Barclays AA cards will automatically convert to Citi AA cards.

Details are as follows:

  • The change will take effect on April 24, 2026. Barclays credit cards will automatically convert to Citi credit cards. As long as the account remains open before then, you can continue using your Barclays credit card.
  • From April 24 to 26, 2026, Citi/Barclays online banking and mobile banking services will be unavailable.

The card conversion mapping is as follows:

  • Aviator Red → Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select
  • Aviator Silver → Citi AAdvantage Globe
  • Aviator Blue → Citi AAdvantage Gold
  • Aviator World Elite → American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp
  • Aviator World Elite Business → AAdvantage Business

All application links for this card now show expired or 404, so it appears that, just as previously mentioned, it was discontinued on September 30. I wonder how many people got in on the final 70,000 and 50,000 no-annual-fee offers.

September 2019 update” The application page for this card mentions that if you previously had or currently have a Barclays AA credit card, you are not eligible for the new-card bonus.

However, one friend previously had a US Airways card, which later became the Barclays AA Aviator Red card after the merger. He then downgraded it to the no-annual-fee version and kept it. Now he applied for Aviator Red again and received a bonus of 60,000 AA miles + a flight voucher. My bold guess is that if your card originally came from US Airways, you may still be able to get the bonus again!

History of This Card

At the time, this family of cards originally had only one main product: the US Airways credit card issued by Barclays. Back when the blogger was still a beginner, this card caused quite a stir on Flyertalk because it could be applied for repeatedly every six months. That meant you could earn the signup bonus (30,000 US Airways miles) once every six months. There was also an application link under which the card earned an extra 10,000 miles at each anniversary when the annual fee renewed, so some people held several copies of this card.

Good times did not last. News broke that US Airways and AA were merging, and this card was facing extinction because AA co-branded cards were issued with Citi, leaving little room for Barclays after the merger. So before the merger, Barclays heavily pushed this card and raised the signup bonus to 50,000 miles, which automatically converted into AA miles after the merger. The blogger and his wife finally jumped in at that time (October 2014). Fortunately, they used a link that gave 10,000 AA miles after paying the annual fee for the first renewal year, so they at least kept it until the first annual fee posted.

Of course, Barclays was not willing to give up this co-branded card without a fight. So in addition to increasing the signup bonus, it also announced the next step in its plan. This card line was split into four tiers: Basic, Blue, Red, and Silver. All existing US Airways cardholders were automatically converted to Red, with the option to upgrade or downgrade. By multiplying its own versions, Barclays expanded the product lineup and let more people hold one. Notably, the Red card was very similar to the Citi AA card, but a little better in nearly every way; the Silver card targeted higher-end AA customers, adding travel and elite-qualification-related benefits. In short, splitting one card into four was Barclays’ way of making a last stand.

In early 2017, Barclays finally got its wish, and the Aviator card could continue accepting applications. Right now, both Citi and Barclays can issue their own co-branded AA credit cards, similar to how both AMEX and Citi could issue their own co-branded Hilton credit cards.

The benefits on this card were substantially changed in May 2019. In my view, the changes made it less appealing for points-and-miles enthusiasts, and they do not provide much special help for frequent flyers either. Here is a summary:

  • Added Anniversary companion certificate: If you spend $20,000 in a cardmember year, you can earn one companion certificate. After buying one AA ticket, you only need to pay $99 (plus taxes and fees) to bring one companion along.
  • Added Wi-Fi Credit: $25 in American Airlines inflight Wi-Fi per cardmember year.
  • Removed 10% mileage redemption rebate: This is very negative news. Previously, you could get back up to 10,000 miles per year, which was worth about $150.
  • Removed the $100 American Airlines flight discount after $20,000 in annual spending: This was essentially replaced by the companion ticket above, which actually seems decent.
  • Annual fee increased to $99: Not a great deal, though it is not a decisive factor in whether to keep the card. I suppose this brings it in line with the $99 annual fee common on mid-tier cards.

In addition, the upgraded version of this card, Aviator Silver, was also changed as follows:

  • Added Anniversary companion certificate for 2 companions: If you spend $20,000 in a cardmember year, you can earn one companion certificate. After buying one AA ticket, you only need to pay $99 (plus taxes and fees) to bring two companions along.
  • Added Wi-Fi Credit: $50 in American Airlines inflight Wi-Fi per cardmember year.
  • Removed 10% mileage redemption rebate: This is very negative news. Previously, you could get back up to 10,000 miles per year, which was worth about $150.
  • Annual fee increased to $199: Up by $5, which likely will not matter much to cardholders.
  • $25 daily reimbursement for inflight food and beverage purchases: An interesting perk. If you fly AA every day, getting some free snacks is pretty nice. This is more useful for frequent flyers.

Application

  • Application difficulty: Medium. It is recommended to apply when you have opened fewer than 3 new credit cards in the past 6 months.
  • You can only receive the welcome bonus on this card once. You may not be eligible for this offer if you currently have or previously had an account with us in this program.

Barclays Application Guide

  • Check Barclays credit card application status
  • Barclays credit card applications generally pull TransUnion (TU), and HPs on the same day can be combined
  • If you already have another Barclays card and your new application is not approved, there will usually be no hard pull
  • You can call the reconsideration line (866-408-4064) to speed up credit card approval or request another review of a denied application. They may verify your identity and address, ask why you want the card, and review your employment and repayment situation, so be prepared. You may need to move credit limit from an existing card to get approved.
