Introduction
One defining characteristic of BofA credit cards is stability. The benefits are generally practical, without many flashy bells and whistles, and most of the cards have no annual fee. Over the years, BofA has mostly made incremental adjustments, slowly updating card benefits to keep up with the times. That said, it has now also launched premium credit cards such as Premium Rewards Elite and Atmos Rewards Summit.
In recent years, BofA’s main direction has been to put credit cards, checking accounts, and Merrill investment accounts into the same rewards ecosystem. The more you have in deposits and investment assets, the higher your credit card spending rewards can be. For users willing to keep funds with BofA and Merrill, this can still be very attractive.
Applications
1. Public online applications for BofA credit cards usually require a U.S. residential address and an SSN. Currently, the online application page asks for information such as a U.S. residential address, Social Security Number, income, and employment. If you do not have an SSN, or if you cannot complete the online application because of identity or address information, you can contact BofA directly or ask at a branch about other application methods. Do not directly apply the IRS 183-day rule for determining tax residency to credit card applications, and do not assume that simply meeting the tax residency standard means you necessarily qualify for BofA’s online application. Ultimately, eligibility still depends on the application page and BofA’s identity verification results. BofA credit card application information
2. BofA’s welcome offers can be unusual, and different application channels may show different offers. Many BofA online promotions clearly state that they are Online Exclusive Offers, and these offers may not be available through branch or phone applications. Therefore, whether applying online, at a branch, through an airline booking page, or onboard a flight, you should first confirm the specific offer shown on the application page. Co-branded cards sometimes provide additional statement credits through airline booking pages, onboard applications, or targeted links. BofA may also send targeted mailers with higher offers. It is recommended to save screenshots of the promotion page and offer terms before submitting an application, so that you can prove what offer you saw at the time of application if needed later.
3. BofA has not published a unified limit on the total number of cards you can hold, but it does impose some limits on total credit line. As long as your credit history, income, and overall relationship with BofA meet its requirements, in theory you can hold multiple BofA credit cards. However, BofA will consider the total credit line it has already extended to you. Sometimes, approval for a new card requires moving part of the credit line from another BofA credit card.
4. When applying for BofA credit cards, pay attention to the 2/3/4 rule, as well as the 3/12 and 7/12 rules. Based on long-term application data points, BofA generally approves at most 2 of its own credit cards within 2 months, at most 3 within 12 months, and at most 4 within 24 months. In addition, BofA also looks at the number of new accounts from all banks on your credit report:
- If you do not have a BofA deposit account relationship, you are more likely to be denied if you have opened around 3 new credit cards in the past 12 months. This is commonly known as the 3/12 rule.
- If you have a qualifying BofA deposit account, the limit is usually relaxed to around 7 new credit cards in the past 12 months, which is the 7/12 rule.
These rules mainly come from actual application data points and are not approval standards publicly guaranteed by BofA. A banking relationship, deposits, and Merrill investment accounts may help in some cases, but they do not guarantee that you can bypass the limits.
5. BofA credit card applications usually result in a hard pull, and multiple hard pulls on the same day can no longer be reliably combined. In the past, a common strategy was to apply for two BofA cards on the same day in hopes of combining credit inquiries, but this method can no longer be relied upon recently. Every time you submit an application, you should be prepared for a separate hard pull. You should also not expect personal card and business card inquiries to necessarily be combined.
6. Some BofA credit cards have restrictions stating that if you currently have the card or had it in the past 24 months, you may not be able to get the card again. This restriction mainly affects application eligibility, not just whether you can receive the welcome offer.
Currently, products such as Customized Cash Rewards, Unlimited Cash Rewards, Travel Rewards, Premium Rewards, and Atmos Rewards Ascent may all have similar 24-month language.
Note the following points:
- Even if you have held the card for more than 24 months, you may still be unable to apply again if you currently still hold the card.
- Converting another credit card to the target card may also be counted as having previously held that product, affecting your application eligibility for the following 24 months.
- Products such as Premium Rewards Elite and Atmos Rewards Summit may have different application terms.
- Business cards also have separate restrictions for the same business entity, so personal card rules cannot be directly applied.
BofA frequently adjusts the specific wording, so be sure to check the terms on the application page at the time you apply. For details, see: Bank of America (BofA) 24-Month Application Rule
7. After applying for a BofA card, you can call reconsideration to speed up credit card approval or have a specialist review a denied application again. Customer service may verify your identity, address, income, and credit report, and may also ask you to submit supporting documents. If you already have a high BofA credit line, it may sometimes be possible to get a new card approved by moving credit line from another card. If you have substantial assets with BofA or Merrill, you can also ask branch staff to see whether they can submit a Special Consideration request, but this does not guarantee that you can bypass application-count limits or product-specific eligibility restrictions. 8. After a BofA welcome offer increases, you can try asking for a match, but there is no guarantee. If a public offer increases shortly after you apply, you can call or try through customer service to request a match. Offers from different application channels, targeted offers, and expired promotions are usually harder to match. The final result depends on the specific account and customer service representative.
Usage
9. After some BofA credit card applications are approved, you can receive new account information immediately. BofA currently states that some approved users will see new account information on the application completion page and can use it immediately for certain purchases. Whether this is provided depends on the specific product, application channel, and identity verification results, and it is not limited to Atmos Rewards credit cards. Some eligible cards can also be added directly to digital wallets such as Apple Pay. If the approval page does not show instant account information, you will need to wait for the physical card to arrive, usually within 7–10 business days. 10. Credit limit increases on BofA credit cards usually involve only a soft pull, and moving credit line between cards generally does not require a hard pull either. However, this is not an absolute rule that applies to every account. If the credit limit increase page or customer service indicates that a credit report will be accessed, it is best to confirm whether a hard pull will be generated before proceeding. Credit line transfers usually require contacting customer service, and they are not available between all credit cards. When applying for a new card, BofA may also proactively move credit line from an existing credit card in order to approve the new account.
11. BofA credit cards offer extra earning bonuses for higher-tier BofA Rewards members. In May 2026, the personal version of Preferred Rewards was replaced by the new BofA Rewards program. To participate, you need to have an eligible BofA personal checking account. Your tier is based on the eligible average balance over the previous three months across BofA deposit accounts and Merrill investment accounts:
- Member: Less than $30,000; eligible credit card purchase rewards are increased by 10%.
- Preferred Plus: $30,000–$99,999.99; credit card purchase rewards are increased by 25%.
- Preferred Honors: $100,000–$999,999.99; credit card purchase rewards are increased by 50%.
- Premier: $1,000,000 or more; credit card purchase rewards are increased by 75%.
Eligible cards include Customized Cash Rewards, Unlimited Cash Rewards, Travel Rewards, Premium Rewards, Premium Rewards Elite, and others. For example, the 3% cash back in the selected category on Customized Cash Rewards can be increased to 3.3%, 3.75%, 4.5%, and 5.25% across the four tiers. This boost applies to eligible everyday purchase rewards; do not directly increase a credit card welcome bonus based on your membership tier. Some first-year promotional rewards also explicitly exclude the BofA Rewards boost in the terms. The business version of Preferred Rewards is still a separate program, so do not mix it up with the new personal BofA Rewards program.
12. BofA cards offer a free museum benefit. Through the Museums on Us program, on the first full weekend of each month, eligible BofA, Merrill, and Bank of America Private Bank credit or debit cardholders can get free admission to about 250 participating museums and cultural institutions across the U.S. To use the benefit, you need to show an eligible card with your name printed on it and a photo ID. Each cardholder can receive one general admission ticket. Special exhibitions, paid events, and other add-ons may not be included. Authorized users can also use the benefit separately if they have an eligible card with their own name printed on it, but one card cannot get the whole family in for free. 13. BofA credit cards can be product changed, but there is no fixed publicly available product-change path. Some co-branded credit cards can be converted to BofA’s own credit cards, and product changes between BofA’s own cards may also be possible. However, whether a product change is available and which products you can switch to depend on your specific account and the options shown in the customer service system. Product changes in the opposite direction, from a BofA proprietary card to a co-branded card, are usually not available. A product change itself does not come with a welcome bonus and will generally preserve the account age and credit history, but the card number may change. Changing another card into Customized Cash Rewards, Travel Rewards, Premium Rewards, Unlimited Cash Rewards, or Atmos Rewards Ascent may also affect your 24-month eligibility if you apply for that card in the future. For details, see: Introduction to credit card product changes
14. BofA has now launched a credit card Refer-a-Friend referral program. Eligible cardholders can generate their own referral link in the BofA App or online banking and send it to friends by text message, email, or social platforms. The products initially supported by the official program include Customized Cash Rewards, Unlimited Cash Rewards, and Travel Rewards, and more cards may be added later. For each referred friend who is approved, the referrer can typically earn $100 cash back or 10,000 points, up to $500 or 50,000 points per calendar year. The referred person can still receive the new-customer welcome bonus shown on the referral application page. Not every card or every account will show the referral option, so the Refer-a-Friend page in your own account is what ultimately matters.
Closing cards
15. After the annual fee posts on a BofA credit card, if you decide to close the card, it is best to do so before the next statement is generated. Based on current real-world data points, closing the card before the next statement comes out usually makes it easier to get a full annual fee refund. However, BofA does not publicly guarantee a uniform refund window, so it is best to ask customer service to confirm the exact refund amount before taking action. Some past data points have indicated that it may be possible to request account reinstatement within a few months after closing a credit card, but this is not guaranteed. Reinstatement may require another credit review and may result in a hard pull, so it is best to confirm the details before deciding to close the card.
16. BofA offers Retention Offers to some accounts, but they are targeted offers. To retain customers, customer service may offer an annual fee waiver, extra cash back, or purchase rewards. In 2026, many users saw an offer to spend $1,500 within 3 months and receive $175, and even some no-annual-fee credit cards showed this offer, but not everyone had it. You can call to ask, or you can check whether an offer appears in the card-closing flow in the BofA App or online banking. If you are only checking for a Retention Offer, do not accidentally click the final Submit button confirming card closure. For details, see: Credit card Retention Offer analysis
17. Before closing a card, you can first try moving its credit limit to another BofA credit card. As mentioned earlier, BofA has certain limits on a customer’s total credit limit. If you close a credit card directly, that portion of the credit limit may not be immediately released in BofA’s internal risk model. Therefore, before closing the card, you can contact customer service and try to move as much of the credit limit as possible to a card you plan to keep long term. If the credit limit cannot be moved, you can also consider lowering the limit first and then closing the card. However, lowering your credit limit may increase your overall credit utilization on your credit report. If the card still has a balance, or if you plan to apply for a loan soon, it is best to calculate the impact first and avoid lowering your credit limit too much just to free up BofA credit limit capacity.
