World of Hyatt Details Major Award Chart Changes, Devaluation

【2026.2 Update】Hyatt announced changes to this year's award chart and hotel category adjustments. Starting in May this year, World of Hyatt will expand the existing three award redemption tiers within its eight hotel categories to five tiers: lowest, low, standard, higher, and top. The adjustment is intended to better match seasonal demand fluctuations at each hotel and reduce the need for large-scale future category changes. Hyatt emphasized that its commitment to a fixed points redemption standard remains unchanged and that it is not moving to a dynamic pricing model.

Comparing the current award chart (both standard hotels and all-inclusive properties have changed), the new lowest tier is indeed lower than off-peak, but Top is quite a bit higher than peak. Given that hotels move into TOP based on higher-priced periods, Hyatt redemption value can be said to have declined. You could say the value of Hyatt points has dropped by roughly 30% overall, though the exact impact still depends on each hotel and date. A detailed comparison is below:

The good news is that free night awards and upgrades have not changed

Free night awards can still be used to book hotels at or below a certain category, without regard to the five-tier distinction
Points/cash upgrades remain the same as before

If you have a hotel stay after May that you plan to book with points, you may want to book early. If the number of points required increases later, you're already set. If it goes down, you can simply cancel and rebook.

Hyatt also previewed two new features coming later this year:

Digital points sharing: members will be able to conveniently share points with family and friends (currently you need to submit a form, which is relatively cumbersome)
Elite member early redemption: Discoverist, Explorist, Globalist, Lifetime Globalist members, and World of Hyatt co-branded credit card holders will have the ability to book award stays in advance,

About Hyatt Hotels Corporation

Hyatt Hotels Corporation is one of the world's top hotel groups, known for its upscale hotels (Park Hyatt, Andaz, etc.), but it also has limited-service brands. This not only broadens the choices available, but also makes frequent-stay program use much more convenient. Membership Program

Membership Requirements

Let's start with membership. World of Hyatt basic membership can be freely registered on the World of Hyatt website. Hyatt has three elite tiers:

Discoverist: requires 10 nights or 25,000 base points
Explorist: requires 30 nights or 50,000 base points
Globalist: requires 60 nights or 100,000 base points

The easiest way to get elite status is to open a Chase World of Hyatt credit card, which automatically grants Discoverist status while you hold it. You can also use a Status Challenge/Match to get Hyatt elite status faster than the usual route.

Membership Benefits

Discoverist members mainly get an extra 10% points, 2 p.m. checkout, and preferred rooms. Explorist members mainly get an extra 20% points, 2 p.m. checkout, and room upgrades excluding suites and Club rooms. Globalist members get room upgrades including standard suites, 4 p.m. checkout, Club access, and 30% extra points. They can also use Guest of Honor to book for family and friends, who will then receive Globalist treatment as well. In reality, room upgrade benefits still depend largely on whether the hotel has availability and on the hotel's attitude toward elite members. Unfortunately, breakfast and lounge benefits are only available to Globalist members.

In addition to membership benefits, Hyatt also offers stay milestone rewards:

2024 Changes

Free night awards, upgrade awards, and club lounge awards became transferable to another person's account starting January 1, 2024, but they can only be transferred once. The expiration date does not change after transfer.

Guest of Honor Awards, Club Lounge Access Awards, Complimentary Suite Upgrade Awards, Category 1-4 Free Night Awards, Category 1-7 Free Night Awards, Miraval Extra Night Awards, and Ultimate Free Night Awards (all as defined below) – and any other Program award the terms for which expressly state that it is eligible for transfer – may, while valid, be transferred to another World of Hyatt Member.Each award is transferable only once and may not be re-transferred by the recipient. (However, as described below, eligible Guest of Honor Awards that have been gifted via transfer as described in this subsection may be applied by the award holder to a reservation made in the name of another Member, as described immediately below.)

Milestone Rewards were expanded, with rewards now going up to 150 nights. They also added awards such as Guest of Honor Awards, the 2,000 Next Stay Award, and the Miraval Extra Night Award.

Guest of Honor changes: if you stay 40 nights or earn 65,000 base points, you can get this benefit. You can make a reservation for someone else so they can enjoy elite benefits too, while both parties can earn elite night credit. Both cash bookings and points bookings qualify. This benefit is limited to 10 bookings per year, with up to 7 nights per booking.

Introduction to Hyatt / World of Hyatt Points

Point value: The average value is about 1.6 c/p, so 100 Hyatt points = $1.6 (Points Value & Analysis). In other words, a hotel stay worth about $160 would generally require around 10k Hyatt points.
How to redeem: You can search and book directly on hyatt.com, and Hyatt uses a fixed award chart. To book suites with points, you need to call.
Point rules: Hyatt points expire after 24 months of no account activity. Point transfers between accounts are allowed, but you need to print, fill out, and submit a form.
My take: To get high value from Hyatt points, it’s best to use them during peak season and at higher-end properties, such as Park Hyatt New York, Park Hyatt Maldives, or resort properties like Hyatt Zilara and Hyatt Ziva. It’s often possible to get around 3 c/p in value, or even more.

Earning Hyatt Points

Like most hotel loyalty programs, Hyatt points mainly come from three sources:

Staying at Hyatt, MGM M Life, and SLH hotels

When you stay at or spend money at Hyatt, M Life, or SLH hotels, you earn 5 Hyatt points per $1 spent. Discoverist members earn an extra 10%, Explorist members earn an extra 20%, and Globalist members earn an extra 30%. Considering how valuable Hyatt points are, this is a pretty fast way to earn them. But note that the hotel must be booked through Hyatt's official channels (website, phone, or front desk) or through the GDS system (some travel agencies or AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts), otherwise you won't earn any points on the room rate. That is why we recommend booking on Hyatt's website. Since Hyatt also offers a Best Rate Guarantee and will match prices found on other websites, there is not much reason to book Hyatt hotels elsewhere. With BRG, you can also get an additional 20% discount or 5,000 points. Also, try to charge all incidental spending to the room, such as buffet meals, because those charges can also earn Hyatt points and are also counted based on the hotel's category.

You can also buy points directly on Hyatt's website at 2.4 cents per point, which is not exactly cheap but also not outrageous. The annual purchase limit is 55,000 points per person. If you are just a little short for an award stay, this is one option to consider. Hyatt also runs buy-points promotions from time to time, usually with 20% or 40% bonus points. Keep an eye out if you need them, and we'll update them in this article as well.

Point Transfers Between Accounts

Hyatt is very convenient in this regard. You can use point transfers, which Hyatt officially calls "point combining," to help redeem free nights. The receiving account can be anyone's account, not just a spouse's, and there is no fee at all. Couples can of course use it to pool their scattered points. Friends or classmates traveling together can also use this policy to transfer points and split the "room cost" with points, which is very convenient and helps avoid disputes.
The process is a bit old-school: print and fill out the form, have both parties sign it, and then scan and email it to World of [email protected]. You can also mail it or fax it to Hyatt. Note that point combining can only be used once every 30 days, but that should be enough for most people.

Using Hyatt Points

After all that hard work earning points, of course you want to spend them. As hotel points, they are meant to be used for hotel stays.

Redeeming Hyatt or MGM M Life Hotels

Free nights at Hyatt hotels can be booked on the official website. Of course, hotels are not created equal and are divided into different tiers. Hyatt hotels used to have 7 categories, from Cat 1 all the way to Cat 7. M Life hotels also had the same categories (from Cat 2-6), but some newer properties have been placed into Cat 8. Hyatt's peak, standard, and off-peak award chart went into effect on October 26, 2021. Key points:

Peak and off-peak pricing does not affect Free Night awards; those only depend on the hotel's category.
Cash + Points is also priced according to peak and off-peak dates.
All room types are priced according to peak and off-peak dates, including standard rooms, club rooms, and suites.

The base room chart is shown below. Their club and suite redemptions can offer pretty good value, so if you have a lot of points, they are worth considering. Redemption notes:

Hyatt-owned hotels do not have a cap on award rooms; as long as a room can be booked for cash on the website, it can also be booked with points.
M Life hotels have blackout dates for award rooms, so you need to check in advance. Suite awards require calling (800) 544-9288.
Before booking, of course you should check the cash rate first and then calculate whether booking through the official website is worth it. Even luxury hotels can sometimes go on huge sales.
The latest C+P option has changed to 50% redemption points + 50% standard rate, so it is no longer very attractive.

Also, all-inclusive resort redemptions have a separate award chart, with categories ranging from A to F. You can see that even the lowest A category requires 15,000 points, which is basically Cat 4 territory. The highest goes up to 50,000 points, a category that doesn’t even exist on the standard award chart. But that makes sense, since all-inclusive already includes meals, lodging, and activities. Note that the points pricing here is based on double occupancy; if you’re bringing a child or another guest, each additional person costs half the room’s points price. For example, a 2+1 stay in A category would cost 15,000 + 7,500.

The Miraval Resorts chain has its own award chart as well, starting at 45,000 points and going up to 65,000 points for additional guests.

Booking MR and Mrs Smith

You can now book MR and Mrs Smith hotels through the Hyatt website, but the bad news is that they use dynamic pricing, and Hyatt points are worth roughly 1 cent/point to 1.4 cents/point. By comparison, booking Hyatt’s own hotels using the award chart generally gives you a value of more than 1.6 cents/point. Just search on the official website and you’ll see that they’re included.

But when booking with points, a $235 room somehow requires 31,500 points. Once taxes are included, the redemption value is less than 1 cent/point, which is terrible.

In addition, booking these hotels through the Hyatt website earns 5x points, but the Hyatt credit card does not earn 5x points here. As for other benefits, only Hyatt Globalist gets room upgrade benefits; other Hyatt membership tiers do not get any benefits at all.

Room upgrades

Upgrading from a standard room to a club room (Regency Club and Grand Club) costs 3,000 points, while upgrading to a suite costs 6,000 points, and upgrading to a premium suite costs 9,000 points. Breakfast is included in all cases. But this only applies to rooms booked at the standard rate, which means you can’t use points to upgrade a room that was already booked with points. Whether that’s worth it is something you have to decide for yourself.

"July 2021 update": You can now use points online to upgrade to a higher room type (available at some hotels). There are three tiers in total: 3,000/6,000/9,000 points. However, there are some restrictions, and you must book a cash standard rate to be eligible. Since the points cost is fixed, it still has some appeal.

For example, a special room that normally costs $779

can be upgraded with points for just $179 + 6,000 points, which works out to a redemption value of 10 cents/point.

In general, the higher-end the hotel, the better the upgrade redemption value.

Transferring to airline miles

With Hyatt points, you can transfer to Aeromexico (Mexico’s airline, SkyTeam) or LAN (Chile’s national airline, oneworld) miles at a 5:4 ratio. You can also transfer to Virgin Atlantic miles at a 5:3 ratio. Or you can transfer to Qantas or Southwest miles at a 5:2.4 ratio. Finally, you can also redeem them into Air China PhoenixMiles or China Eastern Eastern Miles at a 5:3.2 ratio. But don’t forget that China uses kilometers instead of miles, so that effectively shrinks it by another 1.6x, turning it into 5:2. In short, you should probably forget that Hyatt points can be transferred to airlines at all. Only the Aeromexico and LAN transfer ratios are even remotely acceptable.

Avis free rental car

Hyatt points can be used to redeem a free midsize rental car from Avis, at a cost of 6,000 points per day. That’s extremely expensive, already more than the cheapest hotel night, so I usually don’t recommend it. And to redeem a rental, you have to call Hyatt, then wait for them to mail you a paper certificate before you can use it. The process is complicated and takes a long time, so it’s not suitable when you need a car quickly.

Dining, spa, and other charges

Hyatt points can be used directly to offset charges at Hyatt hotels. But because the redemption rate is so bad, I can’t even bring myself to post the table. The redemption rate ranges from 0.5-0.83 cent/point; if you’re interested, you can click here to check it out. Of course, once you’ve looked, you should probably forget about it again.

In addition, Hyatt will increase the point value used to offset dining, spa, and other in-hotel charges on January 29 next year. The redemption rate will rise from 0.5-0.83 cent/point to 1-1.54 cent/point, which looks a lot more usable. Whether it’s worth using depends on how you value Hyatt and how many points you have on hand.

Points expiration

A World of Hyatt account can be deleted after 24 months of no activity, and the points in it will expire and become worthless. Before they expire, you can make a small purchase with the Chase World of Hyatt credit card, transfer 1,000 points from Ultimate Rewards, or simply use some points. Of course, staying at a World of Hyatt partner hotel once or having a meal there also works. I recommend using AwardWallet to manage your points so you can avoid the nightmare of expiring points.

Using free night certificates

Hyatt free night certificates come in two types.

Cat1-7 free night certificate: earn one every year after 60 nights. Of course, you can also use it to book two nights at a Hyatt Place, but I would of course recommend using it to book the highest-end hotel possible and maximize the value. Park Hyatt New York, Park Hyatt Maldives, or Hyatt Zilara or Hyatt Ziva in resort areas are all great uses for these two certificates.
Cat1-4 free night certificate: the Chase World of Hyatt credit card gives you one every year, which effectively offsets the $95 annual fee (old version: $75). Spend $15,000 and you can earn another one. Stay at 5 brands and you can get one, and staying 30 nights per year also earns one.

Every time you complete 5 brands, you get one free night certificate (Categories 1-4), and after another 5 brands, you get 1 more. Points stays count too. In India, you could spend 25,000 points on one trip and complete stays at five brands out of six — Hyatt Regency, Hyatt Centric, Hyatt Place, Grand Hyatt, and Park Hyatt — and also earn another free night certificate. If you stack the other offers mentioned above as well... the number of points you spend would be even lower. Of course, that assumes your airfare is free and you like curry.

World of Hyatt is a program where you can earn points quickly, but there are not many ways to do it. Its hotel redemptions offer excellent value, and you can also transfer points from Ultimate Rewards to use them, which benefits many Chase cardholders.
