【Updated 2025.9】Schwab has updated its account opening bonus. You now only need to make a deposit within 45 days to earn up to $1,000. Details below:
You now only need to fund the account within 45 days. The bonus should post about 1 week after the 45-day period ends. Be sure to maintain the deposit amount required for the bonus you want during this period.
Make a qualifying net deposit of cash or securities within 45 days of opening the account. We'll deposit the Bonus Award into your account about a week after the 45 day period.
- On day 45 after account opening, Schwab will check whether your net deposits meet the requirement, and the bonus will be paid about a week after the end of the 45-day period.
- If you still have not received the bonus after 52 days, you can call 800-398-8640 or contact online customer service to ask for it.
- You need to keep the deposit for one full year, or the bonus may be clawed back!
For taxable accounts, you must maintain the net deposit amount (less any market losses) at Schwab for at least one year or Schwab may charge back the bonus award.
There is another offer with a lower threshold: open an account and deposit at least $50 within 30 days, and you can receive $50 worth of stock. That $50 is split evenly among five of the largest companies in the S&P, so it is basically a starter investment.
(1) opens a Schwab One individual taxable retail brokerage account and (2) deposits at least $50 into that account within 30 days of enrolling in the offer (only outside assets new to Schwab qualify; assets transferred from affiliates other than Schwab Retirement Plan Services are excluded) .

About the Schwab Account
Whether you are traveling in the U.S., China, or anywhere else, there will inevitably be times when you need cash. Aside from your own bank’s ATMs, most ATMs charge a withdrawal fee. This is where the debit card that comes with the Charles Schwab checking account becomes extremely useful, because ATM withdrawals are fee-free worldwide with this card, regardless of whether the ATM itself charges an extra fee. You could say this one card solves your cash access needs almost anywhere in the world.

Note
Opening the checking account and brokerage account is now a Soft Pull (visible only to you, not to others, and it does not affect your credit score). Previous hard pull records have also been removed from credit reports (thanks to reader Victor for providing a screenshot). Overall, this is great news: it no longer affects your credit score, and you no longer need to explain this hard pull when applying for a loan.
In fact, most brokerage accounts and bank accounts do not require a Hard Pull to open.
Advantages of the Charles Schwab High Yield Investor Checking Account
- ATM withdrawals are fee-free at all Visa-supported ATMs worldwide. Any ATM operator surcharge will be reimbursed with no cap, and Visa fees are also waived. Reimbursements are usually credited on your monthly statement. In other words, there are truly no fees.
- The Travel Notice feature is very flexible: it can be set for up to one year, and you can add multiple countries and regions.
- The debit card runs on the Visa network, so ATM acceptance is excellent. The Visa Platinum daily withdrawal limit is relatively high, up to $1,000.
- There is no FTF (Foreign Transaction Fee) when using this debit card for purchases abroad, though of course there is no cash back either.
- No minimum balance is required, and there is no monthly maintenance fee, so the account is very easy to manage.
- Because the account is designed for investing, check deposits and ACH transfers from Schwab to other banks are very fast, and Schwab is generally less sensitive to large transfers. Mobile check deposit has a $10,000 limit (Hard Pull warning ahead), which is higher than at many other banks.
- This checking account comes linked to a free brokerage account, and that brokerage account allows you to apply for Schwab and AMEX co-branded credit cards, including the AMEX Platinum (Schwab version), which supports cashing out MR at 1:1.25.
- Schwab ACH transfers to other banks are a potential way to trigger DD (Direct Deposite) requirements, YMMV.
- Free checkbooks are included.
Disadvantages of the Charles Schwab High Yield Investor Checking Account
- Because you must open a brokerage account at the same time, it used to result in a Hard Pull, likely from Equifax.
- ACH transfers into Schwab from other banks are typically subject to a 4-business-day hold after they go through, though this does not affect your interest earnings. If you need the funds for a transfer, send them a few days in advance. If your trip is only a day or two away, depositing a check directly may be faster and usually takes about 1 business day.
- It calls itself high interest, but the APY is only 0.31% (at the time of writing), which is tiny. The corresponding high-yield savings account also pays only 0.34% APY (at the time of writing), so neither is a good place to park cash. That said, the rates are still much higher than Chase or BofA.
- Stock trading commissions/fees in the brokerage account are relatively higher than at some other brokers.
- The debit card may not work at ATMs of some smaller banks in mainland China that do not support Visa, but it works fine at the major state-owned banks and mainstream commercial banks.
- Some countries may not support cash withdrawals with this debit card, such as Cuba. Thanks to the WeChat reader “49 年入国军” for raising the question about withdrawals in Cuba. For Cuba, it is recommended to exchange USD for euros in the U.S. first, then exchange the euros in Cuba for the currency tourists can use.
Application Notes
- Please note that opening any bank account online requires a W9 (completed for the bank). In theory, you must be a Resident Alien (including green card holders) or a U.S. national/citizen. Online applications are not supported for Non-Resident Aliens (NRA). That is the official rule in theory, though banks generally do not verify closely; any unknown potential risk is your own responsibility.
- The account opening bonus is taxable. Since the default assumption is that the account holder is an RA, Schwab will usually issue Form 1099-INT. This tax form is generally very safe across immigration statuses, so you can report it with confidence.
- After applying online, approval is usually not instant. A few days later, customer service may call to verify information with you. Just answer truthfully. The account is only officially opened after the representative confirms everything is OK.
- The timing for the bonus to post is very YMMV. My personal suggestion is that after registering your online account, transfer a little money into the Brokerage Account—even just a few dollars is enough. If the bonus still does not arrive, contact online customer service and they should help you.
- Like with other banks, the deposit interest rate is basically close to 0.
Exchange Rate
Visa exchange rates are generally pretty good. See the Visa exchange rate calculator for details.
Summary
If you do not plan to use it for investing, the best use of this checking account is to keep only a small amount of money in it for unexpected cash needs, such as needing cash at a Las Vegas casino. If you are traveling abroad, deposit enough money ahead of time to cover your overseas ATM needs. That said, given Schwab’s past enthusiasm for hard pulls, you may also want to consider Fidelity’s Cash Management Account, which currently has no welcome bonus but offers almost the same benefits.
Do you have a Charles Schwab account? Only people who have actually used it abroad really understand how good it is. Feel free to leave a comment and share your experience.
My Experience
KUKU really loves this debit card. For someone like me who spends long periods outside the U.S., it is an amazing tool for moving money around and withdrawing cash while traveling abroad. If you want to keep earning rewards on U.S. credit cards after leaving the U.S., or earn high overseas rewards on Chinese credit cards abroad, this debit card is absolutely worth having. I will also continue sharing long-term usage experiences on the blog.
