HSBC has updated its new Premier Checking opening bonus. New customers can now earn up to $3,000, and you can get $1,000 with as little as a $50,000 deposit. The offer does not require Direct Deposit; you only need to transfer in new money from outside HSBC, or transfer in eligible investment assets, and keep them in place for the required period. The offer runs through December 31, 2026.

Compared with the previous round, the maximum bonus has been cut from $5,000 to $3,000, but the minimum funding requirement has also dropped from $150,000 to $50,000. The $50,000 tier for a $1,000 bonus is especially attractive: if you assume the funds are kept for 3 months, the bonus alone works out to an annualized equivalent return of about 8%, making it the best value in this promotion. Here are the bonus tiers, calculated based on the minimum deposit for each tier and keeping the funds for 3 full calendar months:

  • $1,000 bonus: Deposit or invest $50,000–$99,999. The bonus is equivalent to a 2% return, or about an 8% annualized equivalent return; with the current 3.00% APY on the savings account, the combined annualized equivalent return is about 11%.
  • $1,500 bonus: Deposit or invest $100,000–$249,999. The bonus is equivalent to a 1.5% return, or about a 6% annualized equivalent return; with the current 3.00% APY on the savings account, the combined annualized equivalent return is about 9%.
  • $2,000 bonus: Deposit or invest $250,000–$499,999. The bonus is equivalent to a 0.8% return, or about a 3.2% annualized equivalent return; with the current 3.00% APY on the savings account, the combined annualized equivalent return is about 6.2%.
  • $3,000 bonus: Deposit or invest $500,000 or more. The bonus is equivalent to a 0.6% return, or about a 2.4% annualized equivalent return; with the current 3.00% APY on the savings account, the combined annualized equivalent return is about 5.4%.

These annualized equivalent returns are rough estimates based on the minimum funding amount for each tier. The closer your actual deposit is to the top of a tier, the lower the return rate will be; if you fund the account early in the opening month, the actual holding period may also end up being slightly longer than 3 months. To qualify for the offer, you need to meet the following conditions:

  • You must be a new customer who has never had a U.S. HSBC account. If you previously opened any U.S. HSBC account, you are not eligible even if the account is now closed;
  • You must open a new HSBC Premier Checking account by December 31, 2026;
  • Within 30 calendar days after opening, transfer in at least $50,000 in New Money from outside HSBC, or transfer in eligible investment assets;
  • The funds must remain in place through the end of 3 full calendar months after the opening month; this is not the same as simply leaving the money in for 90 days. For example, if you open the account in October, you need to keep the funds through November, December, and January of the following year. Because the bonus may also take up to 8 weeks to post, you may need to keep the account open for longer in practice. It is best to wait until the bonus has actually posted before moving the funds out or closing the account;
  • You must stay subscribed to HSBC Marketing Emails throughout the entire eligibility period; canceling marketing emails early may cause you to miss the bonus;
  • After you complete all offer requirements, the bonus will be deposited into your Premier Checking account within 8 weeks.

Eligible funds can be kept in HSBC deposit accounts or eligible investment accounts. One simple approach is to open a Premier Relationship Savings account as well and keep the funds there to earn interest. That account’s current Relationship APY is 3.00%. After you open it and link it to Premier Checking, you can automatically receive the Relationship APY for the opening month and the following 3 months, without needing to meet any additional spending or Direct Deposit requirements during that period. Rates can change at any time; the final rate is whatever is shown on HSBC’s official website. HSBC current deposit rates

Also, based on a data point shared earlier by a community member, people in China may also be able to apply for U.S. HSBC Premier directly. You can choose China as your current region and complete the application using a China address, passport, ID card, and proof of address. The catch is that you must be a HSBC Premier customer in China.

This article combines a featured post from the 知识星球 community shared by 大的要来了, along with the hands-on experience of some long-time HSBC users.

Application experience

I recently opened an HSBC account myself, and I’m also combining the application process and experience from a friend’s account opening, so here is an overall overview.

  • What to open: HSBC now lets you open Premier Checking and a Relationship Savings savings account together. That way, once the funds arrive, you can move them straight into the savings account and earn a 3.6% annualized return instead of letting the money sit idle.
  • Application review: After opening with this HSBC link, the application usually goes into pending review status. Within 1-2 business days, you will receive an email from HSBC telling you to call the fraud department, which is usually just address verification. You only need to upload a bank or credit card statement that shows your address. If they ask you to call about the account application, that means they have specific questions about your application, such as the source of funds and the purpose of the account. They also specifically emphasize that this personal account should not be used for business. So when you apply, make sure you fill everything out truthfully, because they will ask in quite a lot of detail. If everything checks out, it is usually approved within 1-2 business days.
  • In very rare cases, people get a phone call saying the account was approved, but then receive an email saying it was denied. In that case, there is no need to waste time calling again; just submit a brand-new application.
  • Setting up the account: After the account is approved, you will receive a series of emails from HSBC. Those emails contain the account activation information, so there is no need to wait for the documents or card to arrive in the mail; you can set up online banking right away. Once you log in, you’ll see that the checking account and savings account are already linked together.
  • The Relationship APY issue: HSBC’s exact wording is that after Premier Checking is linked for the first time, the Relationship Savings account automatically gets the Relationship APY for that month, as well as the Relationship APY for the next three months. So for those of us who just opened the account, it is already treated like Premier Savings, which means you effectively get 3+1 months of the high rate right away. So once the money for the bonus hits the checking account, just move it into the savings account and let it earn the high interest. I received the email in the same month, and it really did get the Relationship APY directly.
  • If you complete the bonus requirements, you will receive an email letting you know that you will get the bonus.
  • In the end, the savings bonus posted at the end of the fifth month, so be prepared to leave the funds there for five months. Fortunately, this savings account already offers a relatively high rate, so it is still a good deal.

About HSBC

HSBC is one of the world's largest banking and financial services institutions. Its full name is The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, which is literally translated into Chinese as "Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited." Its business network now spans Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, North America, and Latin America, with about 3,900 branches in 67 countries and regions worldwide. HSBC deposits are protected by FDIC, so there's no need to worry about the bank going under or anything like that.

HSBC has bank accounts and credit cards in multiple countries, and these accounts are linked and can help one another. You could say that once you open an account in one country, you can open accounts globally. So this article will introduce HSBC accounts in various countries and regions, as well as the related credit cards. Here's a summary of HSBC's advantages:

  1. Transfers between HSBC accounts worldwide arrive instantly and have 0 fees
  2. Multi-currency conversion at live exchange rates, very transparent
  3. Outgoing and incoming wire transfers have 0 fees
  4. You can open credit cards in other countries by making deposits
  5. Supports initiating RTP push transfers and receiving RTP transfers (an instant U.S. interbank transfer system, which can be thought of as an upgraded version of the old ACH)
  6. You can activate Relationship APY, and the deposit interest rate is currently 3.6%

Account opening and bonus (U.S.)

HSBC Checking in the U.S. offers a particularly high bonus, so if you're in the U.S., you can start with them. Even if you don't have enough funds to meet the opening bonus requirement, you may still want to open one directly.

Note that this account's opening bonus has now become a once-in-a-lifetime offer. A small-print line in the promo terms says that if you currently have, or previously had, a U.S. HSBC account, you won't be eligible for the bonus.

Customers who have a current or past HSBC account in the U.S. on file are not eligible for this offer

How to open an account

HSBC US has already sold off all customers below Premier, so opening an account at HSBC US means starting with Premier. The online application requirements are very simple: you only need to be 18+, have an SSN, have a U.S. phone number, and have a U.S. address (preferably one you've lived at for more than a year). If you don't meet those requirements, you can consider applying at a local branch or by phone. That said, we recommend first applying through the link with the opening bonus, then verifying your identity through other channels afterward.

Opening an account If you apply directly for a Checking account on the website and get an automatic system denial, a record will be left in the backend. If you are denied, you can consider

  1. Calling 888.662.4722 for assistance opening the account
  2. Going to a branch to talk to a real person in person

The application must have an SSN, and you need to make sure your credit records with all three credit bureaus are not frozen. If they are, unfreeze them first (HSBC should be a soft pull, so it won't affect your credit score). Making sure the address on file with all three bureaus exactly matches the address you use for your HSBC application can help improve your chances of instant approval (for example, whether "floor" is abbreviated as "fl" and whether "drive" is abbreviated as "Dr"). During the application, you may be asked questions about public records; if you run into any weird options, just choose "none of the above." After you apply, your application may go pending, and then two days later they'll email you to say you were approved.

Another thing to note:

  1. HSBC's processing is fairly slow, so you'll need to be patient. My friend's account opening, document upload, and approval took about half a month in total.
  2. When applying, they may ask whether you want to open a Savings account at the same time. It's pretty unnecessary, so it's not worth it; it's better to open a Relationship Savings account after the account is approved (more on that later).

In addition, if you already have an HSBC account in another country, you can use the same ID documents to open a U.S. account through HSBC International Services. After you submit the application, it will be assigned to the RM in your current country for handling. So you can also choose to contact your RM directly and ask for help with the application.

Relationship APY

The Relationship Savings account mentioned above has a base rate of only a miserable 0.05% APY. If you meet any one of the following conditions, Relationship APY is activated (currently 3.6%):

  1. Spend $500 per month with your debit card
  2. Make at least $500 in credit card payments from Premier Checking to an HSBC credit card. You can transfer directly from your checking account to the credit card in the transfer interface, and your credit limit will be restored instantly
  3. Make $5,000 in direct deposit to Premier Checking every month

Official info

direct deposit

The above-mentioned "making $5,000 in direct deposit to Premier Checking every month" can both waive the monthly fee and activate Relationship APY. You can achieve this by moving money to yourself:

  1. HSBC is very lenient in how it defines direct deposit; almost all ACH Push transfers (note: not wire transfers and not RTP) can be used to fake a direct deposit. For more DPs, see here
  2. If you're still unsure, just try it yourself. Counting from the month you open the account, you won't be charged a monthly fee even if you miss the requirement within the first 4 months (1+3), so feel free to experiment
  3. ACH Push must be pushed to Premier Checking; it doesn't count if you send it to other accounts
  4. The calculation is based on calendar months, so don't wait until the end of the month to do the fake direct deposit

According to readers in our community, the direct deposit required for HSBC's opening bonus can be triggered with transfers (ACH) from Chase or Wells Fargo, which is much easier than a payroll direct deposit. If you have accounts at either of those banks, you can consider using that method to "simulate" it. Note: try not to ACH money in and then transfer the same amount back out a few days later. A better approach is to ACH the money in, then use the HSBC account as the repayment method for a credit card and pay it back that way; if you really don't have enough cash, you can transfer part of it back later. Also, before transferring, you usually need to add the HSBC account at Chase, and there may be two DDs to verify the account

There are several ways to check whether direct deposit has gone through (don't ask customer service directly whether direct deposit succeeded; a human agent can tell):

  1. Check whether the monthly statement charged a monthly fee. However, since no monthly fee is charged during the first 4 months even if you fail, you can't tell from that during this period
  2. Wait for HSBC's email notifying you that Relationship APY has been successfully activated (it's not consistently triggered)
  3. Open a Relationship Savings account, and judge whether it worked by checking whether Relationship APY gets activated. If the direct deposit in month X succeeds, then Relationship APY for month X+1 will be activated. As mentioned earlier, direct deposit is counted based on the calendar month, but confirmation of direct deposit is based on the statement. In other words, a direct deposit that posts in month X can activate Relationship APY for month X+1, but the system will only confirm that Relationship APY has been activated after the direct deposit(s) appear on the checking account statement. So the fastest way to check the result of a direct deposit is to wait until it appears on the checking account statement, then ask chat support whether you have successfully activated the Relationship APY for Relationship Savings (you are asking about the annual percentage yield, not about the direct deposit). If the statement has not come out yet, you cannot find out.

Monthly fee

HSBC Premier has a $50 monthly fee, but it can be waived through certain accounts or actions. To waive the monthly fee, you need to meet one of the following conditions:

  1. Maintain a combined balance of $100,000 across all accounts, including investment accounts. However, trading fees are very high, so you can choose to transfer stocks in from another broker through ACATS and hold them there.
  2. Make $5,000 in direct deposit to Premier Checking every month
  3. Have a loan
  4. Private bank status

If you do not want to hold stocks or do direct deposit, you can consider parking $100,000 and then activating Relationship Savings, which has a 3.6% interest rate and is pretty good.

Zelle

HSBC now supports receiving transfers and sending money to others via Zelle, which makes things much more convenient! I tried the website and could not find the Zelle link; you can only set it up and transfer money from the app.

The website also lists Zelle limits, and compared with other banks they are still quite low: $500 per 24 hours, and up to $3,000 within 30 days

Usage notes

Be careful not to move money in and out too quickly for everyday use

  1. The Bank to Bank transfers feature on the website is standard ACH transfers and can connect up to 5 other accounts. The Transfers button is used for transfers within the HSBC group, wire transfers, and RTP. If an account linked in Bank to Bank transfers supports receiving RTP, that account will appear in Transfers and the transfer method will be shown as Real Time Payment (RTP).
  2. HSBC customer service in any country, whether by phone or online chat, may ask whether you are currently in that country. If you do not mind and want to avoid hassle, you can answer YES. The representative will not verify the actual situation.
  3. In Global View on the website, you can log in and connect your HSBC accounts in other countries, so logging into one account lets you see the balances of all other connected accounts. But note that even if you do not connect them in Global View, HSBC internally can still see all your HSBC accounts in other countries.

HSBC global accounts

Globally, as long as the account in your primary relationship country meets Premier requirements, all linked HSBC accounts in other countries can unconditionally become Premier and have the monthly fee waived:

  1. You can open HSBC accounts in other countries by contacting an RM. HSBC accounts in each country only record whether that account is the primary relationship account for that country, and do not care which country is currently the primary relationship country. So if you want to change the primary relationship country, you only need to contact the RMs in the original primary relationship country and the new primary relationship country separately to make the change; the other countries do not need to be involved.
  2. HSBC policies differ by country; for example, opening an account in CN requires booking online first and then going to a Branch in person.
  3. If you already have an Everyday Global Account (available in SG, AU, MY, etc.; the HK version is called HSBC One), then do not open a Global Money Account. GMA is completely a stripped-down version of EGA. Both are multi-currency accounts, but GMA cannot receive transfers directly from outside HSBC; it must be funded from an HSBC account linked in the same country. So if the currency you need does not have a corresponding account in HSBC in that country, you will have to use HSBC to exchange currency. EGA is a full-featured multi-currency account and does not have GMA's restrictions on transferring different currencies in and out.
  4. If you absolutely need to exchange currency at HSBC, prefer the UK and HK. HK has EGA and the exchange rate is decent (it may even be better than Wise), while the UK has a better exchange rate but only the stripped-down GMA.
  5. Do not open HSBC Expat. It is very sensitive, with many data points showing global shutdowns.

HSBC credit cards

HSBC issues credit cards in various countries. Even if you are not in that country or region, you can get these cards by first opening a local hsbc checking account and then applying for the credit card.

U.S. HSBC Elite

HSBC Elite's standout feature is 5X travel rewards. Although rideshare, parking, and rent no longer count as travel starting in July 2025, it is still extremely rare for common airline and hotel OTAs to earn 5X points.

The benefits are also pretty good.

HSBC China

HSBC China is somewhat special: you can only ever open one card set in your lifetime. Strictly speaking, once you cancel the card, you cannot open it again, and card conversions are not allowed either (one exception is that moving from a lower-tier card to a higher-tier card through asset deposits can be handled manually). Supplementary cards are also limited to one set. Therefore, the recommendation is to go straight for the best card so you do not regret it later. HSBC China credit cards are the easiest UnionPay Diamond cards to get on the mainland (excluding no-annual-fee fake Diamonds). Benefits and the annual-fee waiver need to be activated by depositing CNY 500,000 at HSBC China. Conveniently, HSBC CN's Premier monthly-fee waiver threshold is also CNY 500,000.

HSBC Hong Kong Cards

The famous Pulse UnionPay card, very suitable for spending in mainland China.

You can place a 3-month time deposit to improve your chances of card approval. There is a promotion for new-money time deposits, but note that the new-money quota for HKD updates in real time, while non-HKD updates the next day, so you need to wait until the day after the money has been transferred in before opening the time deposit.

A quirk of HSBC Hong Kong accounts is that if a foreign-currency balance is 0, that foreign-currency account will be automatically hidden. The only way is to first transfer in a small amount of HKD, then exchange it inside HSBC to activate the foreign-currency account, and only then can you transfer foreign currency into it.

HSBC Singapore

In 2025, HSBC SG was cut hard, and it does not really have any good cards left. For card-collection enthusiasts, HSBC Revolution may be worth considering, with no annual fee.

Summary

If you need to make global transfers, opening an HSBC account is still a pretty good option. In addition, you can manage accounts globally for free through the main account, and you can open local credit cards, which makes it one of the most convenient ways to establish a foothold in a new market. According to reader YSU, HSBC's systems have improved significantly, and it has unique advantages in both transfers and credit history transfers; its credit cards are also quite good. So if you need it, it's worth considering~

HSBC Checking in the U.S. offers especially generous bonuses, so if you're in the U.S., you can start with them.
