Bank of America is notifying existing Spirit Airlines co-branded credit card holders that their accounts will be automatically converted to the no-annual-fee Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards credit card. Of course, the main reason is that Spirit has stopped operations, so the card is going away too.

Some targeted conversion offers also include a $250 cash bonus and an extra 2% cash back through September 30, 2026. However, different users may receive different offers, so please refer to the email sent by Bank of America for the exact details.

Conversion offer

  • Bank of America will mail a new Customized Cash Rewards credit card;
  • You can continue using the old Spirit Airlines credit card until the new card arrives;
  • The account number, credit limit, and APR will remain unchanged;
  • The new card has no annual fee;
  • The old account's no foreign transaction fee benefit will continue, while the standard version of Customized Cash Rewards usually charges a 3% foreign transaction fee.

Special bonus

Some cardholders will have a $250 Cash Rewards bonus posted directly to their account. Based on the emails we've seen so far, this bonus appears to be mainly for users who did not previously receive the Spirit Airlines card welcome bonus.

There does not appear to be any additional spending requirement at the moment, and Bank of America may simply add it to the account automatically. However, this is a targeted compensation offer, and not every Spirit Airlines cardholder will receive it.

Some users can also earn an extra 2% cash back on all purchases through September 30, 2026. Based on the Customized Cash Rewards base earning rates, that works out to:

  • Choice category: up to 5% cash back;
  • Grocery stores and wholesale clubs: up to 4% cash back;
  • Other purchases: 3% cash back.

The choice category, grocery store, and wholesale club purchases share a $2,500 quarterly bonus cap. After you exceed the cap, the base cash back drops to 1%, and whether the extra 2% promotion still applies will depend on the terms in your personal email.

Summary

Spirit Airlines cardholders should check their email soon. Even if you did not get the $250 bonus, converting to the no-annual-fee Customized Cash Rewards card is not a bad outcome, and some legacy accounts can still keep the no foreign transaction fee benefit.

If you received the extra 2% cash back, you may want to use this card first through September 30. In particular, if you set the choice category to online shopping, dining, or travel, the promotion can bring you up to 5% cash back during the offer period. However, because the bonus and cash back are both targeted, the personal email terms are what ultimately apply.
