The limited-time bonuses on the UA cards are ending soon. If you’ve already applied for a personal card, you can consider also holding a business card. These limited-time offers should expire on May 20.

The new benefits on UA co-branded cards are now live. Award redemptions get a 10%-15% discount, mileage earning rates will also increase, and cardholders can see more award space. So holding a UA card is pretty worthwhile. On top of that, several UA cards currently have very strong limited-time offers, so here’s a unified overview.
- Differentiated mileage earning: Starting April 2, 2026, the award miles members earn from flying will depend primarily on whether they hold a co-branded credit card. Members with a credit card—even if they do not use that card to pay for the ticket—will earn at a higher rate than members without a card. At the same time, members with neither a credit card nor elite status will earn no miles at all when flying Basic Economy.
- Exclusive redemption discounts: Primary cardmembers of co-branded credit cards will automatically receive at least a 10% discount when redeeming any award ticket. If they also have elite status, the discount increases to at least 15%.
- More award seats: United will also provide credit card holders with access to more extra saver award inventory, especially in its premium Polaris business class, and this benefit can be stacked with the discount above.

Summary
Let me start with my personal conclusion:
- Beginners and experienced players alike: just get the United Explorer personal card. It has no annual fee for the first year plus an 80,000-mile welcome bonus, so it is basically cost-free to hold. After that, you can downgrade or cancel based on your own situation.

Next, let’s go through a few angles on why I came to this conclusion.
First-Year Value
We generally keep a credit card for at least one year, because getting the welcome bonus and then immediately closing the card can easily get you flagged by the bank and affect future applications. In addition, after holding the card for a full year, you can choose to downgrade to a no-annual-fee version or close it outright, and at that point it usually will not have any impact. So for cards with large welcome bonuses like these, we usually focus on first-year value.
From a first-year perspective, the 80,000-100,000-mile bonuses on these cards are all excellent. But aside from the United Explorer waiving the annual fee for the first year, the others all have annual fees of $150+, so if you only hold them for one year and do not use the benefits, that can be a bad deal. Using a valuation of 1.5 cents per UA mile, the first-year value ranks as follows:
- United Business: 100,000*1.5 cents/mile = $1,500 in value; after subtracting the $150 annual fee, net value is $1,350
- United Explorer: 80,000*1.5 cents/mile = $1,200 in value; no need to subtract a first-year annual fee, so net value is $1,200
- United Quest: 100,000*1.5 cents/mile = $1,500 in value; after subtracting the $350 annual fee, net value is $1,150
- United Club Business: 110,000*1.5 cents/mile = $1,650 in value; after subtracting the $695 annual fee, net value is $955
- United Club: 110,000*1.5 cents/mile = $1,650 in value; after subtracting the $695 annual fee, net value is $955
- United Gateway: 40,000*1.5 cents/mile = $600 in value; no annual fee, so net value is $600
You can see that if you are eligible for business cards and only want one, the United Business has the highest first-year value, followed by the United Explorer. Note that this does not include the various statement credits and Travel Bank credits available on each card. In fact, the United Quest gives a $200 Travel Bank credit each cardmember year, and that unconditional benefit can be counted toward first-year value, since you can use it up simply by booking one UA flight. So once you add that extra $200 in value, the United Quest is roughly on par with the United Explorer and becomes the second card worth considering.
Also note that after the refresh, all of these cards except the Gateway come with various credits, such as Travel Bank from rental cars, rideshare credits, hotel credits, Instacart credits, and so on. Personally, I think most of these are pretty marginal unless you already have a real need for rideshare and food delivery. So for first-year value, just add them in based on whether you will actually use them.
In addition, the Quest and the two business cards also offer extra PQP rewards, which can be quite valuable if you are trying to earn elite status.
UA-Related Benefits
These are all UA co-branded credit cards, so if you fly UA often, you can get quite a few benefits from them. Of course, these benefits are also directly tied to the annual fee, so you should choose the card that best fits your travel needs.
Checked Bags
If you have ever paid for checked bags, you know how expensive even one bag can be, especially on international flights. So checking bags just two or three times a year can already exceed a card’s annual fee. These co-branded cards all offer baggage benefits:
- United Business: first checked bag free, also valid for a companion
- United Explorer: first checked bag free, also valid for a companion
- United Club Business: first two checked bags free, also valid for a companion
- United Quest: first two checked bags free, also valid for a companion
- United Club: first two checked bags free, also valid for a companion
- United Gateway: two free checked bags (activated after spending $10,000 per year)
If you frequently check bags on domestic US flights, you can choose the right card based on how many bags you usually check. The spending requirement on the Gateway is too high, so you might as well hold one of the annual-fee cards instead.
Lounge Benefits
If you fly UA often and especially like UA’s own lounges, these cards also provide airport lounge perks.
- United Business: two Club Passes per year
- United Explorer: two Club Passes per year
- United Club Business: unlimited access for the cardholder
- United Club: unlimited access for the cardholder
That said, I personally think lounges available through Priority Pass are a complete substitute, so there is no need to be overly attached to UA’s own lounges.
Elite Status
For people who fly a lot, earning UA elite status can be quite valuable. And with your own flying plus the right credit card, it becomes easier to reach elite status. If you are a heavy spender, you can consider the United Quest and Club cards, since in theory you can earn elite status through spending alone. If you are choosing just one, the United Club is still the best option.
- United Business: earn 1 PQP per $20 spent, up to 4,000 PQP
- United Explorer: earn 1 PQP per $20 spent, up to 1,000 PQP
- United Club Business: earn 1 PQP per $15 spent, up to 28,000 PQP
- United Quest: earn 1 PQP per $20 spent, up to 18,000 PQP; 1,000 PQP each year starting in 2026
- United Club: earn 1 PQP per $15 spent, up to 28,000 PQP; 1,500 PQP each year starting in 2026
UA Spending Return
Other than the 4x and 3x categories, anything below 2x can be fully replaced by the Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve. So unless you buy a lot of UA paid tickets, you might choose the Club card or the Quest; otherwise, there is no real need to focus on this factor.
- 2x on UA purchases: United Business, United Gateway, United Explorer
- 3x on UA purchases: United Quest
- 4x on UA purchases: United Club, United Club Business
Other
- Access to extra award space: If you hold a UA co-branded card, you can see additional award seats, similar to UA elite members. This is especially helpful when booking award tickets during peak travel seasons. However, the United Gateway card now requires $10,000 in annual spending to unlock this benefit. The lowest annual fee option is the United Explorer at $150, so it may be worth keeping long term.
- Award ticket upgrades: On popular routes, especially long-haul international flights, it is generally very unlikely that there will be any open business class seats. Also, before departure, travelers with upgrade certificates often lock up those business class seats first. Personally, I do not think this benefit is very useful, and the upgrade priority is probably below elite members.
- Award ticket discount: The United Club gets a real 10% discount on economy award tickets.
- Mileage discount certificate: The United Quest comes with one 10,000-mile discount certificate each year.
Holding both a personal and business card
One nice feature of the UA business cards is that if you also hold any personal card, you can earn an extra 5,000 miles each year. That means you could downgrade your previously opened personal card to the no-annual-fee Gateway card and still get this extra 5,000-mile bonus, lowering the effective cost of keeping the business card. Of course, if you want stronger benefits or you are aiming for elite status, holding both annual-fee versions can also make sense.
High-spending bonuses
These UA cards all have spending-based bonuses, meaning if your annual spending is high enough, you can earn extra rewards. You can choose based on your own spending level. Of course, if you do not want to put a lot of spending on a UA card, you can skip this part. The upgrade certificates here should work by booking Economy Plus and then applying the certificate, which can let you lock in business class seats earlier, so the value can be quite good.
- United Business: two Economy Plus upgrade certificates valid within the U.S. (after $25,000 annual spending)
- United Explorer: one 10,000-mile award discount certificate (after $20,000 annual spending)
- United Club Business: two global Economy Plus upgrade certificates (after $40,000 annual spending); 4 Club passes (after $50,000 annual spending)
- United Quest: 1 extra 10,000-mile discount certificate each year (after $20,000 annual spending)
- United Club: one 10,000-mile award discount certificate (after $20,000 annual spending, can be earned twice); 4 Club passes (after $50,000 annual spending)
- United Gateway: two free checked bags and access to co-branded-card-exclusive UA award space (activated after $10,000 annual spending)
Various new statement credits
I saved this section for last because these credits feel pretty underwhelming. They are annoying to use, since you have to keep track of them every month, and the amounts are not very large. It really can get frustrating. Each card has some differences in these credit amounts, and you can see the details on each card’s benefits page, so I will not list them all here. Here is a quick take on these credits:
- Renowned hotel credit: the $200 one can be somewhat useful, since taking $200 off a luxury hotel stay can still offer decent value. If it is only $100, though, it feels much less compelling, especially since other booking platforms may have much better prices.
- rideshare: just a small credit each month. If you drive yourself, you may not use it at all. If you live in a big city like New York and take taxis or rideshares for commuting regularly, then this is a real benefit.
- Avis rental credit in the form of UA TravelBank: not very useful, since renting through other platforms may save you more money.
- JSX discount: most people will not use it
- Instacart membership and credits: this is also broken into monthly pieces. Unless you already shop with them regularly, there is no need to force yourself to use it every month. You might easily spend more than you save.
Summary
That is about everything. Overall, for personal cards I recommend the United Explorer (and if you have already had it, then consider the Quest). For business cards, I recommend the United Business.
