  • U.S.-based accounts: $25 per 1,000 points before tax. With the 70% bonus, buying 300,000 points yields 510,000 points total, for a total cost of $7,522 including a $22 processing fee, or about 1.48 cents per point.
  • U.K.-based accounts: £15 per 1,000 points before tax. With the 70% bonus, buying 300,000 points yields 510,000 points total, for a total cost of £4,515 including a £15 processing fee, or about 0.89 pence per point (roughly 1.2 cents).

Annual purchase limit: To support the promotion, Virgin has temporarily increased the annual points purchase cap, excluding bonuses, from the usual 200,000 points to 300,000 points. Buying guidance and value analysis:

  • Transaction type: Points purchases are processed by Points.com and usually do not code as airline spending. It’s generally best to use a strong everyday spending cash-back card or a card where you’re working on minimum spend for a new sign-up bonus.
  • Valuation reference: A conservative industry valuation is about 1.1 cents per point. This offer is slightly above that conservative valuation, but still well below the value you can often get when redeeming for premium-cabin awards.

  • Partner network: Points can be used for awards on Air New Zealand, Delta, Air France/KLM, and other SkyTeam members and partners.

Risks and reminders:

  • Availability: Award seats on popular routes are extremely limited, so advance planning is essential.
  • Points policy: Virgin points never expire, so there’s no expiration risk and they can be worth hoarding for future use.
  • Alternative option: Virgin is also a transfer partner of major flexible points currencies such as Membership Rewards, Ultimate Rewards, and ThankYou Points. Travelers can compare the value of transferring points directly versus buying them.

My take: Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points have a unique advantage for premium-cabin redemptions on transpacific routes. Although this sale is not the cheapest we’ve ever seen, it’s a solid way to lock in premium travel costs for anyone who doesn’t already have enough points for a specific award and doesn’t want to wait for a bank transfer to post. In particular, U.K.-based buyers can get a significantly better price than U.S.-based buyers, making the value especially strong.
