When to Buy Marriott Bonvoy Points
In general, buying points without a bonus or discount is usually not a good deal, because the purchase price is often higher than the value you get when redeeming them. However, there are some situations where buying points can make sense. The most common use case is topping off your account so you can book a stay you are already considering.
Here are a few situations where buying Marriott Bonvoy points may make sense:
1. Buying points is cheaper than paying cash: Compare the hotel’s nightly cash rate with the award rate to see whether buying points would actually save you money.
2. You are just short of the points needed to unlock the “Stay for 5, Pay for 4” benefit: If you do not have enough points to book five nights, buying a small number of points could effectively get you one free night.
3. You need to top off your account for a specific redemption: Even if you are only short a few thousand points, topping off your balance may be cheaper than paying cash for one night.
For example, in this promotion, you can buy 43,000 Marriott Bonvoy points for $537.50. With the 40% bonus, you would receive a total of 60,200 points. When you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points to most airline partners (but not American, Delta, or Avianca), you can receive 25,000 airline miles, making your cost 2.15 cents per mile. If you transfer to United MileagePlus and transfer at least 60,000 points, you will receive an extra 10,000 bonus miles, bringing your final cost to 1.79 cents per United mile.
