About Japan Airlines (JAL)

Japan Airlines, also known as JAL, airline code JL, is one of Japan's two major airlines and a member of the oneworld alliance. Its frequent flyer program is called JAL Mileage Bank, or JMB.

JAL miles are not especially easy to earn in the US, but they can be very valuable when redeemed. When you redeem for JAL-operated flights at the standard award level, a one-way business class ticket from North America to Japan costs only 55,000 miles. JAL also still publishes a oneworld multi-carrier award chart priced by total flight distance, which is well suited for designing multi-city, round-the-world, or stopover-heavy itineraries.

That said, JAL miles also have a few notable drawbacks: miles usually expire at the end of the 36th month after they are earned, and everyday activity does not extend them; JAL-operated economy, premium economy, and business class use PLUS dynamic pricing; and award tickets usually also require fuel surcharges.

Japan Airlines' main hubs include Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT), and Osaka Kansai Airport (KIX). JAL flies from Tokyo to many cities in the United States, Canada, China, Southeast Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East.

As a oneworld member, JAL miles can be redeemed for flights on alliance members such as American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, Qantas, Finnair, and Malaysia Airlines. In addition to oneworld members, JAL also partners with some non-alliance airlines, including Korean Air, Emirates, Air France, China Eastern Airlines, and Bangkok Airways. JAL Elite Status

JAL's elite status is determined mainly by the FLY ON Points earned in each calendar year, or by meeting the required number of flights. FLY ON Points are status points and cannot be used to redeem tickets.

How to Earn JAL Miles

Flying JAL and Partner Airlines

When you fly Japan Airlines, the miles you earn are usually determined by segment distance, cabin, and fare class. Discount economy fares may earn only a portion of the flown distance, while business and first class usually earn at higher rates.

When you fly oneworld and other partner airlines, you can also enter your JMB account number as your frequent flyer number. However, earning rates vary widely by airline and fare class, so before booking it is a good idea to check the JAL flight mileage earning page (official site). Personally, I would not prioritize earning JAL miles. If you are based in the US, it is usually more convenient to keep earning AA miles; they are much more likely to be useful.

Bilt can transfer to JAL at 1:1, making it the most attractive channel right now. Capital One also supports direct transfers, but 2:1.5 means that every 1 Capital One Miles point only gets you 0.75 JAL miles. Marriott Bonvoy currently transfers to JAL at 3:1; conversely, JAL miles can also be converted to Marriott Bonvoy points at 4:3. However, the value of that option is usually very poor, so it is not recommended for normal use.

JAL USA CARD

You can also apply for the JAL USA CARD in the US. The card currently has two reward structures: Basic Rewards and Premium Rewards.

Premium Rewards costs $85 per year in total. Although it lets you earn JAL miles directly, the everyday spending rewards are not especially compelling. For most U.S. users, Bilt or Capital One points are more flexible.

The Three Types of JAL Award Tickets

When redeeming JAL miles for flights, there are three main rule sets:

  1. JAL-operated international flights: Priced by specific route and cabin. Economy, premium economy, and business class may switch to PLUS dynamic pricing after standard-award seats sell out.
  2. Standard partner airline awards: Priced by the total flight distance of all segments on the ticket.
  3. oneworld multi-carrier awards: Also priced by the total distance of the entire itinerary, but with more flexibility for segments, stopovers, and airline combinations.

You can remember JAL's rules like this:

  • JAL-operated international awards: priced by the route chart, not by distance.
  • Standard partner awards: add up the flight distance of each segment, then look up a single total-distance chart.
  • oneworld multi-carrier ticket: also add the distance of each segment, then check the total distance chart.
  • The latter two do not add up the “miles needed for redemption” for each segment, but instead add up the “flight distance” for each segment.

The most noteworthy option here is Business Class from North America to Japan. Whether you depart from New York, Los Angeles, or Seattle, the base price is 55,000 JAL miles one way, which is very competitive among current airline mileage programs.

The most distinctive short-haul Asia redemptions are Japan-Korea, mainland China, Hong Kong, and Manila. When cash tickets are expensive or you need to buy a one-way ticket at the last minute, Economy and Business Class can both offer some redemption value.

JAL Award Ticket PLUS dynamic pricing

After the base-award seats in Economy, Premium Economy, and Business Class are gone, JAL may still allow members to issue tickets using more miles. That is Award Ticket PLUS.

PLUS is not simply a matter of adding a few thousand miles on top of the base price; it is fully dynamic pricing. Taking Business Class from North America to Japan as an example, the base price is only 55,000 miles, but on peak dates the PLUS price may reach 200,000 to 300,000 miles, or even exceed 400,000 miles.

So seeing “available” in a search result does not mean it is worth redeeming. Before ticketing, be sure to confirm whether the display shows the 55,000 base price or a much higher PLUS award ticket.

JAL First Class special redemptions

JAL First Class does not use PLUS dynamic pricing, but instead is divided into low, standard, and peak seasons by departure date. All prices below are one-way.

Major North American cities include New York, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Vancouver. However, not every route or every date has First Class available; it also depends on the aircraft type actually operating the flight.

Partner airline award tickets

Standard partner awards

When redeeming on partner airlines such as American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Korean Air, and Emirates, JAL usually charges based on the total distance of all flight segments on the entire ticket.

For example, the longer the itinerary, the more miles you need; adding a connection also increases the total flight distance. As a result, when a nonstop flight is available, it is usually more cost-effective than taking a detour with a connection.

American Airlines and Alaska Airlines U.S. domestic First Class are usually priced at the Business Class level. Partner awards may also be subject to fuel surcharges, airport taxes, and other fees.

oneworld multi-carrier award tickets

One of the most distinctive JAL mileage redemptions is the oneworld multi-carrier award ticket, priced based on the total distance of the entire itinerary. It is suitable for itineraries with multiple cities, multiple stopovers, or near-round-the-world trips.

The most noteworthy band is 14,001–20,000 miles. A whole Business Class itinerary requires only 120,000 JAL miles, and you can include multiple oneworld airlines and several stopover cities.

Main itinerary rules

  • Up to 8 flight segments are allowed;
  • Up to 7 stopovers are allowed;
  • One surface segment is allowed, and it counts as one stopover;
  • Up to 2 domestic Japan segments can be added;
  • One-way itineraries are allowed;
  • The same city may appear up to 3 times in the entire itinerary, but you may stop there only once;
  • When multiple cabins are mixed, the entire ticket is charged at the highest cabin class;
  • You cannot return to the original departure city and then continue flying to other cities.

Best JAL mileage redemptions

North America to Japan Business Class: 55,000 miles one way

Flights from New York, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, and Vancouver to Japan all have the same JAL-operated Business Class base price of 55,000 miles one way.

This price is clearly lower than many other airline programs. But two conditions still have to be met: first, you must find a base-price award seat; second, you must be willing to pay the fuel surcharges and taxes charged by JAL.

Japan to Europe in business class: 55,000–57,000 miles one way

A business class award from Japan to Frankfurt or Helsinki costs just 55,000 miles, while London and Paris are 57,000 miles. For a long-haul business class flight of more than ten hours, that is a very solid redemption.

However, fuel surcharges on Europe routes can be relatively high, so it is worth comparing the cash price and total taxes before booking.

Japan to China, Hong Kong, and Korea

Base rates from Japan to mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Korea are also attractive:

  • Japan–Seoul: economy 7,500, business 18,000;
  • Japan–Beijing / Shanghai Pudong / Guangzhou: economy 10,000, business 24,000;
  • Japan–Hong Kong: economy 11,000, business 26,000;
  • Taipei–Okinawa: economy 7,500.

If cash fares are high, or if you need to buy a one-way ticket at the last minute, these short-haul redemptions can sometimes deliver good value.

Japan to Southeast Asia in business class

A one-way business class award from Japan to Manila costs 24,000 miles, while Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City cost just 30,000 miles, and Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Jakarta are 40,000 miles.

Flights to Southeast Asia are significantly longer than flights to China or Korea, so business class awards are usually easier to turn into strong cents-per-mile value.

oneworld multi-airline business class

If you can keep the entire itinerary within 20,000 flown miles, a oneworld business class award costs just 120,000 JAL miles. With up to 8 segments and 7 stopovers, you can build an itinerary that is worth far more than a normal round-trip ticket.

For example, you can combine multiple oneworld airlines across the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, but you still have to satisfy the routing direction, total distance, segment count, and award-seat requirements, so planning is fairly complex.

Short-haul partner awards within the U.S.

Using the standard partner award chart, if the total distance of the entire itinerary is no more than 1,000 miles, economy costs just 12,000 miles; if it is no more than 2,000 miles, it costs 15,000 miles.

This can work for some short-haul American Airlines or Alaska Airlines itineraries. But because the award chart prices the total distance of all segments on the entire ticket, adding a connection can quickly push you into a higher band.

Other

JAL mile value

Our reference valuation for JAL miles is about 1.5 cents/mile. Actual value depends on how you use them:

  • JAL base-rate business class: usually 2–5 cents/mile, or even higher;
  • oneworld multi-airline complex itineraries: when structured well, the value can be very high;
  • regular economy class: usually around 1–1.5 cents/mile;
  • expensive PLUS awards: may fall below 1 cent/mile, so do not redeem blindly.

Also, when calculating redemption value, you must subtract fuel surcharges, taxes, and the miles you would have earned from buying the ticket with cash.

Fuel surcharges and taxes

JAL-operated international award tickets require airport taxes, government taxes, fuel surcharges, and insurance surcharges. Fuel surcharges are adjusted periodically and may vary depending on the country of departure, the issuing region, and the route. JAL-operated long-haul business class awards may require very few miles, but the cash taxes are not necessarily low. Europe, North America, and some long-haul Asia routes especially require you to compare the total cost first. Partner airline award tickets may also charge the partner carrier’s fuel surcharges. Fees vary a lot by airline, so you cannot look only at the mileage number in the award chart.

Here are a few fuel surcharge examples: these are approximate amounts for tickets issued in July–August 2026. Itineraries originating in Japan are priced in yen; departures from outside Japan, such as the U.S., are usually priced in U.S. dollars or local currency. The most extreme cases right now are long-haul Europe/U.S. routes:

  • U.S.–Japan round trip: fuel surcharge about $882
  • Japan–U.S. round trip: fuel surcharge about ¥130,000
  • This does not include airport taxes, government taxes, or other fees

In other words, even if you use JAL miles to redeem a U.S.–Japan business class award, the cash portion can still approach or exceed $900.

Change and cancellation rules

JAL-operated international award tickets cannot be changed directly after ticketing, including date, flight, and cabin changes. You need to cancel the original award ticket first and then rebook.

  • Cancellation fee: 3,100 yen per award ticket, or the equivalent amount in local currency;
  • Miles refunded: miles are refunded only if the entire award ticket has not been used at all;
  • Partial use: after using part of the itinerary, the remaining segments usually cannot have their miles refunded;
  • No-show: if you do not fly on the booked date, the award ticket may be forfeited and the miles will not be refunded;
  • Upgrade: you cannot upgrade an award ticket by paying the fare difference or combining upgrade vouchers.

Mileage expiration

Regular JAL miles expire at the end of the 36th month after the month they were earned. For example, miles earned in August 2026 will expire on August 31, 2029. Unlike programs such as American Airlines or Alaska Airlines, ordinary flying, credit card spend, transfers, or redemptions cannot extend the validity of old miles again. Each mileage balance has its own expiration date. JMB Diamond and JGC Premier members can pause mileage expiration during the period of eligible membership benefits; regular members should decide how they will use miles before transferring them.

How to search and book award tickets

Search JAL-operated flights

  1. Log in to your JAL Mileage Bank account;
  2. Go to Redeem your miles;
  3. Select JAL International Award Ticket;
  4. Choose one-way, round-trip, or open-jaw itineraries;
  5. Enter the date, origin, destination, and cabin;
  6. Carefully confirm whether the price shown is the base price or the PLUS price.

JAL’s website also offers an award seat calendar so you can view nearby dates at once. If a given day shows only a very high mileage price, that usually means the base-tier seats are already gone.

Search partner airline and oneworld award tickets

After logging in, select JMB Partner Award Ticket to search partner airlines or multi-city itineraries. Some China Eastern routes and Jetstar Japan international flights may not be ticketed directly on the website, and you may need to contact JAL customer service.

For complex oneworld itineraries, it helps to prepare the following first:

  • Check each segment to make sure award space is available in the same cabin;
  • Calculate the total distance of all segments;
  • Confirm that there are no more than 8 flight segments;
  • Confirm that stopovers and open-jaw segments do not exceed the rule limits;
  • Record the flight number, date, origin, destination, and cabin;
  • If the itinerary cannot be pieced together online, contact the JAL Award Reservations Desk.

Preparing to book with JAL miles

The recommended order for searching and cross-checking is:

  1. JAL website: check JAL's full inventory and the actual mileage required;
  2. AA website: see whether it is partner-bookable inventory;
  3. BA or Qantas: cross-check the results;
  4. Once you find space, transfer Bilt or Capital One points.

If JAL shows:

  • 55,000 business class, and AA also shows it: this is usually lower-priced inventory that partners can also book;
  • 55,000 business class, but neither AA nor BA shows it: this may be extra JAL inventory or a system sync difference;
  • 150,000 business class, and AA shows nothing: this is basically JAL PLUS inventory;
  • Nothing on JAL, AA, or BA: there is probably no award space available right now.

When does JAL release award space?

JAL international award tickets can be booked as early as 360 days before the departure of the last segment of the trip, starting at 12:00 a.m. Japan time. For round-trip tickets, you need to wait until the return segment is also within the 360-day window before you can book both directions as one round trip.

Booking far in advance

  • Calculate the Japan-time equivalent of your target date in advance;
  • Start searching when the last segment enters the 360-day window;
  • Prioritize a one-passenger search to confirm whether the base-level award is really there;
  • Also search Haneda and Narita, as well as nearby alternative departure airports;
  • From North America, you can also check cities such as Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, and New York.

Keep in mind that opening the booking window does not mean business or first-class base-level seats will necessarily be released at the same time. Some flights may only open economy class, or may show PLUS pricing right away.

Last-minute releases

JAL has not published a fixed pattern for last-minute award releases. In practice, you can focus on checking inventory about 14 days, 7 days, 3 days, and on the day of departure, but this is only an observed pattern and not an official guarantee.

If business class cash sales are mediocre, JAL sometimes releases base-level award seats again close to departure; if the flight is selling well, it may not release any at all.

Aircraft and schedule changes

When JAL changes aircraft types, adds flights, or adjusts its seasonal schedule, it may also release a large number of award seats at once. So in addition to searching fixed dates, it can also be worth watching new routes, added frequencies, and route changes operated by the A350-1000.

Don't transfer points too early

Once JAL miles are transferred in, they cannot be returned to Bilt, Capital One, or Marriott, and they have a fixed validity period of 36 months. Because of that, it is best to find a bookable seat first and then complete the transfer right away.

If the transfer does not post instantly, you also need to consider the risk that someone else books the seat while you are waiting.

Conclusion

JAL Mileage Bank is a mileage program with very high upside, but also a relatively high barrier to use. The simplest use is redeeming 55,000 miles for a JAL business class base award between North America and Japan. A more advanced use is taking advantage of the total-distance-based oneworld award chart to design multi-city or near-round-the-world itineraries.

When using JAL miles, the most important thing is to distinguish between base awards and PLUS pricing. Seeing business class availability does not necessarily mean it is worth redeeming. If the price jumps from 55,000 miles to 200,000 or 300,000, or even 500,000 miles, you should usually walk away.

Because miles are only valid for 36 months and transfers cannot be reversed, it is best to confirm the exact flight, base-level award space, and taxes first, and then transfer from Bilt, Capital One, or Marriott. For users who are willing to spend time researching routes and award inventory, JAL miles are still one of the most distinctive airline mileage currencies available today.
