Hilton Free Night Certificate Guide: 2026 Full Update

This post seems to have been out of date for a long time, so here’s a 2026 refresh. These days, booking through the app chat or web chat is recommended—no need to call, which is much more convenient!

Hilton Free Night Certificate Introduction

I believe everyone has already earned plenty of Hilton points through sign-up bonuses, and you can also pick up Free Nights (FN) every year through various channels. Today we’re talking about tips for using Hilton free night certificates. A Hilton Free Night (FN) can be redeemed for a standard room at most Hilton hotels around the world. It cannot be redeemed at certain all-inclusive resorts, some vacation properties, and all Hampton properties in China (I don’t think anyone would want to use an FN at a Hampton anyway). Since it can be used at almost any Hilton hotel, a conservative valuation is $300+. Here is the list of properties where it cannot be used:

Free night certificates are valid for one year, and you must complete the stay before the expiration date. In theory, the certificate cannot be used for someone else, but in most regions you can get around this by adding the other guest to the reservation (Asia is very strict, so this usually does not work). If the certificate is in two different accounts, you can book the stay first and then merge the reservations.

Ways to Earn Free Night Certificates

There are many ways to earn Hilton free night certificates:

• AMEX Hilton Surpass/Ascend: earn an additional free night certificate after spending $15,000 in a calendar year. Sometimes the sign-up bonus also includes free night certificates
• AMEX Hilton Aspire: receive one FN each member year after paying the annual fee, and another FN after spending $60,000 in a calendar year
• AMEX Hilton Business: earn one FN after spending $15,000 in a calendar year, and another FN after spending $60,000. Sometimes the sign-up bonus also includes free night certificates
• AMEX Hilton: sometimes the sign-up bonus also includes free night certificates
• Other cards when you first upgrade to AMEX Hilton Aspire

Usually the FN from the AMEX Hilton Aspire after paying the annual fee takes 8-12 weeks to arrive, but FNs earned from spending thresholds usually post much faster, typically in about 10 days. So if you don’t have immediate travel plans, it can make sense to try to meet the spending requirement in December to delay the certificate’s expiration. In addition, Hilton co-branded cards sometimes run special spending promotions that award free night certificates. If you hold multiple Hilton cards, all the certificates can be consolidated into one account, which is extremely convenient! After the certificate is issued, Hilton will proactively send you an email letting you know that a Free Night has arrived. The email subject line is:

xx, Your Free Night Reward has arrived!

You can also log in to your Hilton account and see the free night certificates you have, their expiration dates, and any that are already attached to a stay.

How to Book

Except for some Hilton hotels that cannot be booked (including all-inclusive and independent hotels), the key requirement for using a Hilton free night certificate is that the hotel must have standard room reward availability. If you want to check online, just search using points For example, if the result shows sold out or premium room rewards, you cannot book with a certificate. As long as it shows standard room reward, you can call to book. For some popular hotels, availability can be hard to find.

Phone Booking

If Hilton FN booking is not convenient online, you have to book by phone. Reservation phone numbers:

• China: +86-400-820-0500 (mobile), +86-800-820-0600 (landline)

Based on my personal experience, China-based customer service is more professional and resolves issues faster. U.S. agents are hit or miss and often do not understand what you want. So I recommend choosing the China call center first. The booking steps are basically the same:

• Call the number
• Enter or provide the Hilton membership number to the agent
• Verify the account: the agent will ask for your name, email, and phone number
• Tell the agent which hotel and dates you want. If you have multiple certificates, you can book multiple consecutive nights;
• Tell the agent which certificate you want to use. You can give the last four digits of the certificate number (you can check this on the website), or the expiration date. Make sure the correct one is used...
• During the booking process, the agent will send a verification message to your email, which you need to check

• After booking, you can see it in your account, although it still appears as a points reservation, but no points will be deducted.

• You can see that the certificate has been used in your account

APP/Web Chat

Calling requires a bunch of verification details and entering your membership number, which is inconvenient. Here I’ll share my experience booking through the app chat.

• 1. First, check on Hilton whether the hotel and dates you want have a standard room available. When you search with points, availability is usually shown as a round number in the tens of thousands; that usually means standard room inventory is available.
• 2. Open the Hilton app, go to the Help page, and choose chat with us
• 3. Tell the agent you want to make reservation with free night certificate
• 4. You’ll be transferred to a live agent, who will ask for the hotel and dates
• 5. Note that you must have a valid credit card on the account when booking. If your credit card has expired, please add one
• 6. During the booking process, the agent will ask you to receive a verification code by email
• 7. Provide the verification code, and the booking will be confirmed immediately. You’ll receive an email right away (the email will show a points redemption), and you can also see the reservation in your account, with the certificate used.

Of course, you don’t need to chase only the highest redemption value. For example, my stay at Waldorf Astoria Beijing was very good, and if you have a real need to stay there, it is worth it.

For example, at Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, the standard room is $2,640 per night. It would take 250,000 points, but one certificate covers it!

Combining Free Night Certificates with the Fifth Night Free on Points Stays

There are many DP reports saying you can combine a points stay with a free night certificate and still get the fifth night free. Normally, to get the fifth night free, you need to pay entirely with points, but some agents will let you use a certificate plus points and still waive the fifth night. You can try this through chat, and if it doesn’t work, just cancel. This method is not guaranteed to work, since it seems not every rep knows how to do it, so you can try a few times. The biggest advantage of Hilton free night certificates is that there is no category restriction, so they can be used at very high-end hotels. If you can earn a few extra through credit cards and use them for stays, they are extremely valuable. Of course, the simplest approach is to hold the Aspire card, which gives you one every year for a solid one-night stay!
