Some cardholders logged in on July 27 and saw a prompt saying they would be taken to Capital One's system for sign-in and account management. A few smaller perks are also changing. I have four cards at home; one has migrated over to Capital One, while the others haven't changed. The application link now redirects straight to Capital One. Fortunately, the first-year Match on all cash back is still in place, and you can now use check your eligibility to test whether you can get approved without a hard pull
- Discover application link (get a $100 opening bonus)
I spent some time on the Capital One side and compared the other changes
- Cash back is now transferred directly to the Capital One side, where it can be redeemed, but it cannot be converted into Capital One Miles and combined with a Venture card to transfer miles (too bad)
- Gift card redemptions still follow the old Discover card redemption system. There are some discounts, but the value generally isn't great, and the selection is much smaller. Some of the regular 20% off options are gone
- The referral cap has been reset, and it does not count together with Discover's previous annual limit of 10 people
The rest is the same as summarized before
- Interest rates, payment cycles, and similar terms have had slight adjustments. But there is no change for people who pay on time.
- Discover Identity Alerts will begin to be phased out starting July 10, 2026, and will be fully shut down on July 24, 2026. You must use Capital One's CreditWise tool to get FICO® Score 8
- The annual fee remains $0; the cash back structure is unchanged (5% quarterly categories + 1% everything else).
- After migration, you can get additional cash back channels such as Offers, Travel, and Entertainment through Capital One.
- The doubled cash back on new cards is still preserved (that is, first-year quarterly cash back is 10%).
Discover announced the third-quarter 5% cash back categories: gas/EV charging, transit, and drugstores. Details below
- Gas/EV charging: you can really only use it as-is; some gas stations sell gas gift cards
- Public Transit, purchases made with airlines; commuter services such as bus, rail and ferries; long-range rail; and chartered buses: including airfare is a real plus, and airline gift cards may also work! The rest can only be used as-is.
- Drugstores: drugstores have lots of third-party gift cards, making it easy to max out!

Highlights
- Cash back match: New applicants automatically get the cash back match promotion. All cash back earned will be doubled, and the doubled reward is credited on the first statement in the card's second year. That means 2% everyday cash back, 10% quarterly cash back, and doubled Discover Deal cash back. More details: Discover cash back match analysis
- 5% quarterly cash back: This credit card offers 5% cash back in different categories every quarter, including home goods, dining, gas, all online shopping, department stores, Amazon, and more. It's a great card for shopping and buying for others. For details, see "Credit card 5% cash back summary"
- Flexible cash back: You can not only redeem cash directly to your bank, but also buy gift cards for Shell, Staples, Starbucks, and other stores at a discount. Some cards also support e-gift cards, which means when you need one, you can redeem the cash back in your Discover account right away, and the e-gift card will be sent directly to your email. For details, see "Discover cash back guide"
- No foreign transaction fee: Among cards with no foreign transaction fee, Discover in China uses the UnionPay network, so it's the most convenient to use back home. Visa and MasterCard are often not accepted in many smaller places. See: Foreign transaction fee introduction
- Free credit score and credit report: Discover provides your real TransUnion credit score (FICO) once a month, so you can track changes in your credit score. In addition to the score, it also gives you a summary of your credit report, which lets you quickly understand your credit status. This is among the best offerings from banks. For a detailed comparison, see "Which free credit score is the best"
- Two new perks: SSN Security Alerts will notify you when your SSN appears on suspicious websites to help prevent identity theft; New Account Alerts will email you when a new credit card, loan, or similar account appears on your Experian credit report, so if an account that isn't yours shows up, you can catch it in time. Discover SSN and New Account Alerts benefit signup link
- Refer-a-friend bonus: At the end of 2017, Discover changed the sign-up bonus category from cash back to statement credit. The guess is that with the cash back match, the bonus for the referred person could become $100, and for the referrer in the first year it could reach $500*2. Now, this referral bonus is a real $50, and if you don't spend anything, it can even make your balance negative. The specific details are shown below:
Drawbacks
- Low credit limit: For students with no credit history, the card may only start with a $500 limit. But it's still enough for basic spending. After about half a year of use, the limit will start to increase
My review:
This was my first credit card, and it got me through my first half year in the United States. Groceries, dining, online shopping — I can still recite the card number from memory. Overall, as a first credit card, it's a perfect fit. Students with no credit history and on-campus jobs (TA, RA) can often get approved easily, and among all no-annual-fee credit cards, this one has some of the best benefits and value.
Its credit score feature lets beginners keep track of their score at all times. The quarterly 5% cash back also lines up very well with everyday spending habits. Cash back can be redeemed for discounted gift cards, and Discover Deal is another cash-back booster that offers stacked high-rate cash back at different merchants. Because it uses the UnionPay network, it's also very convenient when using the card back in China. The recent cash back match promotion is especially amazing: all cash back earned, including Discover Deal, sign-up bonuses, Good Student Rewards, and the 5%/1% card rewards, will be doubled. The newly introduced Good Student Rewards also encourages students not to neglect their studies. In short, for students, this card is a very well-rounded top-tier card.
