Q3 2026 has already begun. Below is a roundup of the 5x quarterly bonus categories across major credit cards this quarter, plus which categories are worth prioritizing for activation and spend.
Discover: The Q3 5% cashback categories are EV charging, transit, and drugstores. Details are below (activation link). Note that if you are in your first year with Discover, cashback is doubled, so 5% becomes 10%; for overlapping categories, prioritize Discover.
- Gas/EV charging: You’ll probably just need to use it organically. Some gas stations sell gas gift cards.
- Public Transit, purchases made with airlines; commuter services such as bus, rail and ferries; long-range rail; and chartered buses: Including airfare is genuinely great news. There’s even a chance airline gift cards may trigger it! For the rest, you’ll probably just use it as-is.
- Drugstores: Drugstores sell lots of third-party gift cards, so this one is very easy to max out!
Chase Freedom series: The Q3 5x categories have been announced: gas/EV charging, public transit, and select live entertainment, which makes this a decent fit for summer travel. That said, it’s still not especially easy to max out, since there aren’t many obvious places to buy high-value gift cards. Activation link.
Details are as follows:
- Gas Stations and EV Charging: You’ll probably just need to use it organically. Some gas stations may sell gas cards or other gift cards.
- Public Transit. Merchants in this category include operators of passenger trains, buses, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages.: Reloading transit cards may be a good way to lock in some of this 5x in advance.
- Select Live Entertainment. Merchants in this category sell tickets for live in-person entertainment such as major sporting events, zoos and aquariums, concerts, theatrical productions, museums, tourist attractions and exhibits, amusement parks, circuses, carnivals, bands, and entertainers. Ticket agencies selling on behalf of the entertainment venue are included. Some merchants that sell tickets for in-person entertainment are not included in this category; for example, movie theaters, bowling alleys, horse racing tracks, casinos, and dance hall/clubs. Purchasing from a hotel/concierge is not included nor excursions or purchases as part of a travel package. This includes admission tickets for many attractions and concerts, but not movie theaters. In short, it’s good for travel and outings.
- United Way: charitable organization
Citi Dividend: Gas stations and home improvement stores (activation link)
- Gas stations: You’ll probably just need to use it organically. Some gas stations sell gas gift cards.
- Home improvement stores: Lowe's, Home Depot, and similar stores sell lots of third-party gift cards, so it can be worth stocking up a bit.

2026 Quarterly 5x Cashback Summary
Some credit cards offer not only the standard 1% cashback on everyday spending, but also rotating quarterly 5x categories, i.e. 1% x 5 = 5% cashback. Using the right bonus-category credit card for the right purchase category can help maximize your savings. And if you are a little flexible, these quarterly bonus categories can even be used to cover nearly all of your spending. Today, we’ll summarize the major quarterly 5x cashback cards, their bonus categories, and how to use them effectively. This article mainly covers several of the most common credit cards with rotating quarterly bonus categories:
- Discover it (no annual fee, $100 welcome bonus, first-year cashback match; the quarterly 5% becomes 10%)
- Chase Freedom (discontinued, same categories as Flex)
- Chase Freedom Flex (no annual fee, $200 welcome bonus, quarterly 5x Ultimate Rewards)
- US Bank Cash+ (no annual fee, $200 welcome bonus, choose 2 categories for 5% cashback each quarter and 1 category for 2%)
- Citi Dividend (no annual fee, no longer available to apply for)
If you don’t already have them, I highly recommend keeping the following two currently available 5x cards for the long term. They complement each other well and cover many everyday spending categories.
5% rotating categories each quarter; no annual fee! Great as a first student card

Discover it
Discover no longer announces the entire year’s 5% cashback categories at once. Instead, it announces each quarter’s categories on the first day of the month before that quarter begins.
- Q1: Grocery stores: most people can probably spend $500 per month here pretty easily. If you can find a Chinese supermarket that accepts Discover, even better. Wholesale clubs: Sam's Club counts, and its gift cards can also be used at Walmart, so you can buy them there and use them at Walmart. Streaming services: not especially useful, since many people probably already have cards that offer statement credits or reimbursement for this category, so use those first.
- Q2: Discover’s Q2 5% cashback categories (or 10% in your first year) are restaurants and home improvement stores. Restaurants: this category is hard to force-max, and restaurant gift cards usually aren’t especially attractive since many apps already sell discounted gift cards, so just use it for normal dining spend. If you are getting 10% in your first year, though, it’s still quite nice. Home improvement stores: this usually includes merchants like Lowe's and Home Depot. In addition to regular merchandise, these stores sell a large number of third-party gift cards, such as Amazon, Visa gift cards, gas cards, and more. If you happen to have spending in those areas, you can buy gift cards to trigger Discover’s 5% or 10%, then use the gift cards at those merchants later. If you are a new Discover it cardholder, all cashback is doubled in the first year, which means all of the above rewards are doubled too—so you effectively get 10% cashback for the quarter.

- Card overview: Discover it credit card review
- Pros: No annual fee. For new cardholders, the quarterly 5% cashback is also doubled, effectively making it 10% cashback for the quarter.
Chase Freedom/Flex
- Q1: Dining, Norwegian Cruise Line (cruises), and American Heart Association. Overall, these categories are not that useful, so this is basically just a dining card! However, there is a chance that the extra 4x on dining can stack with the card’s regular 3x on dining, turning it into 7x, which would make it quite useful.
- Q2: The Q2 5x categories are Amazon, Chase Travel, and Feeding America.
- Q3: Not yet announced
- Q4: Not yet announced
- Quarterly 5x activation link: Chase Freedom Flex official website
- Activation deadline: Activate by the 14th of the last month of each quarter, and all eligible purchases made earlier in that same quarter can still earn 5x
- 5x cap: Earn 5x on the first $1,500 each quarter, then 1x afterward
- When rewards post: After each statement closes
- Track usage: Link to check quarterly 5x usage (login required)
- Card review: Chase Freedom Flex
- Pros: No annual fee. The 5x is actually earned as Ultimate Rewards points. If you also have a premium Chase card, those points can be transferred to airline miles and hotel points, making it possible to get 1.6 cents per point in value. That means quarterly 5x Ultimate Rewards can be worth about 8% back.
Citi Dividend
- Q1: Amazon and streaming. Streaming includes: Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Disney, DirecTV Stream, ESPN+, fuboTV, Max, NBA League Pass, Netflix, Pandora, Paramount+, Showtime, Sling TV, Spotify, Starz, SiriusXM, Vudu, YouTube Red, YouTube TV, and Tidal. You can simply max out Amazon, and if that is not enough, buying gift cards and storing the value there also works.
- Q2: Groceries and Citi Travel. Grocery stores: just use it for normal grocery shopping; if you cannot use it all up, supermarkets also sell a large number of third-party gift cards. In this quarter, you can finish the full $6,000 for the year and get the full $300 reward. Citi Travel: not very useful; grocery stores are much more convenient.

US Bank Cash+
- Choose your own quarterly 5% categories: If you already have other 5x credit cards, then in Q1 it may be better to choose cell phone bills (you can prepay), bookstores (for back-to-school book purchases), and fast food (to cover part of your dining spending). Of course, it depends on your spending habits.

How to maximize these quarterly 5x categories
Casual credit card users
For casual credit card users, it is enough to know which categories earn 5x and carry the corresponding card during the relevant quarter.
Advanced credit card users
Since these quarterly 5x categories are only valid for one quarter at a time, even if you have all of the cards above, you still cannot cover year-round spending such as gas and groceries. In that case, you can use category swapping to turn one bonus category into effective 5% back on another category. For example, when grocery stores earn 5x, you can buy gas gift cards to stock up for later quarters, effectively making your gas purchases earn 5x in the rest of the year. Drugstores also sell gift cards for many other merchants, such as Amazon and eBay. Department stores such as Sears also sell many third-party gift cards, and so does Best Buy. By using gift cards as a bridge, you can earn 5% back on almost all your spending. For more analysis, see:
Manufactured spending users
- Gas stations: 7-11 may carry Vanilla cards, and the store may still code as a gas station
- Drugstores (CVS, Walgreens): PayPal My Cash and various Vanilla cards
- Sears, Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy: $200 Visa gift cards with PIN
For Citi Dividend, drugstores are the best choice because the fee is 1%.
