Back in June, Mastercard launched the True Name program. It allows cardholders to change the name on their credit card so it better reflects their “true” identity.
For many in the LGBTQIA+ community, the name on their credit, debit or prepaid card does not reflect their true identity. As a result, for the transgender and non-binary communities in particular, the card in their pocket can serve as a source of sensitivity, misrepresenting their true identity when shopping and going about daily life.
Now Citi is also joining the program. You can update your preferred name, and your card will then be reissued with that preferred name on the front. Customer service will also use the name you provide. Here’s how to make the change:
- Log in to your Citi-branded credit card account (or you can call the number on the back of your card) .
Under Profile, go to Contact Information.
- Click “Use a Preferred First Name,” enter the first name you go by and click save.
- If you have a Citi® banking account, check back for debit card updates. To learn more, visit citi.com/updatemyname.
My take: this does address the needs of some cardholders. But banks may also face a higher risk of card fraud as a result.
