On December 15, 2019, Canada’s Transportation Agency (CTA) brought Part II of the new Air Passenger Protection Regulations into force. Beginning December 15, 2019, airlines must compensate passengers for flight delays. The longer the delay, the larger the payment, typically CAD 400–1,000 (about CNY 5,300).

Separate compensation for overbooking and baggage loss has been in place longer. Since July 15, 2019, CTA has already enforced Part I of the new Air Passenger Protection Regulations; if a passenger is denied boarding due to overbooking, compensation of CAD 900–2,400 is required (this overbooking compensation was something UA had already prepared for). For lost or damaged baggage, compensation is available up to CAD 2,100.

Although passengers appear to have strong compensation protections, to maintain profitability, airline ticket prices are likely to rise indirectly. For people who fly in Canada often, that may not be a benefit. For those who fly to Canada only occasionally, this is a very good regulation.
