Wells Fargo currently has a $400 bonus for opening a checking account, and online applications are accepted.

  • Application link
  • The application requires a ZIP code, and all ZIP codes in the U.S. are accepted.
  • Expires July 6, 2020.
  • You need to identify as a Resident Alien (though this is not verified). The bonus is paid via either a 1099-INT or 1099-MISC form; both tax forms are generally safe for all resident statuses and can be reported normally. For additional terms, carefully review the application Terms.

Bonus requirements: need a total of at least $4,000 in qualifying Direct Deposits within 90 days, as follows:

Bonus Requirements:

(i) Open a new, eligible Wells Fargo consumer checking account with a minimum opening deposit of $25 by July 31, 2020. All account applications are subject to approval.

(ii)Within 90 days of account opening (the "qualification period"), receive a total of $4,000 or more in qualifying direct deposits to the new checking account during the qualification period.

  • A qualifying direct deposit is a direct deposit of your salary, pension, Social Security, or other regular monthly income, electronically deposited through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network by your employer or an outside agency.
  • Transfers from one account to another, mobile deposits, deposits made at a banking location, or ATM do not qualify.

(iii) Throughout the qualification period and until the bonus is paid, you must maintain a balance in your account greater than $0. Accounts with a zero balance may be subject to automatic closure pursuant to the terms of the Deposit Account Agreement.

Wells Fargo’s credit cards currently have fairly strict applicant restrictions for green card holders or citizens. There are exceptions, but those exceptions are typically tied to applicants who already have a Wells Fargo checking or savings account. If you are not a green card holder or citizen, opening a checking account is usually the only way to get one of their better cards. After holding a checking account for a while, you can try visiting a branch and asking a banker to help you apply for the card you want—success rates are fairly decent, though YMMV.
