Walmart launched the Walmart+ membership program on Sept. 15. The service costs $98/year or $12.95/month, and the membership benefits include:

  • Same-day delivery for online orders, as fast as within 1 hour. Orders placed on walmart.com ship free with no minimum purchase; non-members need to spend at least $35 for free shipping, and Walmart Grocery (fresh groceries) still requires a $35 minimum for free shipping.
  • Discounts on fuel at Walmart and its partner gas stations (Murphy USA and Murphy Express), with savings of up to $0.05 per gallon.
  • Use scan & go checkout inside Walmart stores.

This improved no-minimum free shipping can now compete with Amazon Prime, and delivery can be as fast as same day. I placed an online order for one item at a little after 1 a.m. and received it at a little after 9 a.m. the next morning—the delivery was incredibly fast. Compared with Prime, this is still quite competitive.

Walmart+ members can try the service free for 15 days, and answering three questions when signing up for the trial can add another 15 days of use, which is equivalent to a free one-month trial. Ibotta also offers cashback for paid memberships: signing up for a monthly Walmart+ membership through the Ibotta link earns $10 back, and the fee is $12.95/month; subscribing to an annual Walmart+ membership earns $25 back, and the fee is $98/year. It is worth noting that if you do not want to keep the membership, it is best to wait until it is close to expiring before canceling, because a Walmart+ membership expires on the same day it is canceled.
