Application requirements
In theory, Non-Resident Aliens (NRA) cannot open the account online and need to visit a branch. However, one reader reported that an NRA was approved online using an SSN.
Opening a business checking account is a little more complicated than opening a personal account, but if there is no further review, it is basically the same and can also be approved instantly. The application asks for the following information:
- Your SSN, personal address, and phone number: business applications also require personal information for identity verification
- Your business’s Taxpayer Identification Number (EIN, SSN, ITIN): if you have a business entity, use EIN; you can also apply as a sole proprietorship using your SSN
- Name, email address, and phone number for any additional owners with 25% or more ownership in the company: depending on your ownership structure, if you are applying with SSN, you will not have this
If you are unlucky, they may ask for additional documents or call to learn more about your business. If you apply using your SSN as a sole proprietorship, you can explain what kind of business you plan to run—selling used items, offering consulting services, and so on—and that usually convinces them.
Fees
Monthly fee
The Business Essentials account has no monthly fee as long as you enroll in paperless statements.
The Business Platinum account has a $30 monthly fee, which can be waived if you meet any of the following conditions:
- Open a U.S. Bank Payment Solutions Merchant Account, or
- Maintain a $25,000 balance or $75,000 in deposits
Early closure fee
There is no early account closure fee, so you can receive the bonus and close the account right away.
Tax information
The bonus is taxable, and a tax form will be issued based on your taxpayer status. When filing taxes, report it as interest income. If you used an SSN, include it on the interest income line of your personal tax return.
My take
The bonus itself is pretty good, and the first tier only requires $5,000 in deposits, which is fairly low. Most importantly, you can fund $3,000 at opening with an AMEX credit card (Visa and Mastercard too), which is a good way to meet card welcome bonus requirements.
