Have you used TaxAct’s online tax filing products? If so, you may be eligible for compensation. TaxAct was recently sued over allegations that it shared users’ personal and financial information with third parties, including Facebook and Google, without permission. Although TaxAct denies any liability or wrongdoing, it agreed to a settlement of about $17.5 million.

Who Is Eligible for Compensation?

  • If you used TaxAct’s online tax filing products (Form 1040) between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2022, and filed a tax return through TaxAct’s online products, or if your spouse used TaxAct’s online products during the same period to file a joint tax return, you may qualify for a cash payment and free access in 2024 to TaxAct Xpert Assist for professional guidance related to your tax year.

Settlement Amount

The total settlement is about $17.5 million, and the actual payment for each affected user is estimated to be about $18.65.

In addition, TaxAct will provide Xpert Assist to settlement class members who submit a valid claim and use TaxAct’s online products in 2024, including TaxAct’s free products, to prepare a tax return. Xpert Assist lets you speak with a real tax expert by phone and receive personalized tax advice.

Important Dates

Claims must be submitted on or before September 11, 2024.

The final approval hearing is scheduled for November 21, 2024, at 2:00 PM Pacific Time.
