Marriott’s suite upgrade awards have changed, and the updates officially took effect today. The old Suite Night Awards have now been renamed Nightly Upgrade Awards. If you still had unused old awards, they should automatically convert to the new ones. However, awards that were already attached to an existing reservation will keep their original functionality.

The main changes are:

  • Upgrades can now be confirmed as early as 3 days before check-in, instead of 5 days before. If the upgrade has not cleared by 2pm 3 days before arrival, the award will be returned to your account.
  • The list of eligible brands has expanded and now includes some Ritz-Carlton and EDITION properties.
  • More room types are now eligible.

The following properties are excluded:

Nightly Upgrade Awards can be redeemed at all participating Marriott Bonvoy® properties except:

  • All-Inclusive Resorts
  • Bulgari
  • Design Hotels
  • Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy®
  • Marriott Executive Apartments
  • Marriott Vacation Club
  • Marriott Grand Residence Club
  • The Ritz-Carlton Club
  • Ritz-Carlton Reserve
  • The Ritz-Carlton Residences
  • The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection
  • Sheraton Vacation Club
  • The Phoenician Residences, a Luxury Collection Residence Club, Scottsdale
  • Westin Vacation Club

Here is how you can earn these suite upgrade awards:

  • Marriott members who reach 50 elite nights in a calendar year can choose 5 awards
  • Marriott members who reach 75 elite nights in a calendar year can choose 5 awards
  • AMEX Marriott Brilliant cardholders who spend $60,000 in a year can choose 5 awards
  • Certain limited-time targeted promotions

These awards are still worth having if you can get them, and they can be used on both award stays and paid stays.
