HSBC Premier Checking’s new-customer bonuses are well worth looking into. In this fourth-quarter 2026 promotion, deposit at least $50,000 to earn $1,000; with $100,000, the Checking bonus is $1,500. If you also qualify for the HSBC Securities New to Wealth promotion, opening a new Self-Directed Brokerage account can earn you an additional $500. With the right cash strategy, you can also earn deposit interest or money market fund yields of 3%+ APY. With enough funds, you could earn up to $4,000.

However, HSBC’s account-opening and review processes can be a bit cumbersome. Based on my own account-opening experience and those of friends, I’ve put together the practical steps and timeline for earning the bonuses to make things easier. This article is for new customers who have never had a U.S. HSBC account. To learn more about these accounts and the current promotions, see these three related articles:

If you’re opening a Premier account from China, Hong Kong, or another country or region, I cover special considerations at the end of the article. You can also read this overview of the global account:

Step 1: Confirm the account-opening bonuses and choose a funding strategy

What to do: First, confirm that you qualify as a new U.S. HSBC customer, then choose which account-opening bonus to pursue based on how much money you have available. Once you’ve done that, you’ll know how much to prepare, which accounts to open, and how long to keep the funds there.

This round of HSBC new-customer bonuses requires that you have never had any U.S. HSBC account, including one that has since been closed. Simply having an HSBC account in China, Hong Kong, or another region generally does not affect your new-customer status in the U.S.

I recommend applying in October–November if possible, so you have time for the review, any requests for additional documents, and transfers. In theory, waiting until the last minute in December to open the account can shorten the time your funds are tied up and improve the annualized return. But HSBC’s review times are unpredictable. I don’t think it’s worth risking the entire account-opening bonus just to improve the returns on paper a little.

The estimates below all assume an ideal scenario: you complete the qualifying account opening and funding by the end of December, keep the funds in place from January through March 2027, and earn an assumed 3% annual return on cash. The annualized figures simply multiply the three-month return by four for comparison; they do not represent the actual annualized return based on how long you hold the funds until the bonus arrives. If you open your account earlier, you may need to keep the funds there longer. The following options offer relatively high returns; choose one based on your available funds.

$1,000 bonus: $50,000 in funds, held for about 3 months, approximately 11% return

  • What to do: Open Premier Checking and Premier Relationship Savings, and deposit a total of $50,000. Keep all the funds in Savings.
  • Bonus: $1,000 new-customer bonus
  • Estimated return: $1,000 new-customer bonus + $375 (three months of interest at 3% on $50,000) = $1,375, equivalent to an annualized return of 11%

If you don’t want to deal with an investment account or transferring funds, this is the simplest option. The annualized return is still solid, and the minimum is manageable. Just make sure to open and fund the account by December 31.

$1,500 bonus: $50,000 in funds, held for about 3 months, approximately 15% return

  • What to do: Open Premier Checking and a self-directed brokerage account, and deposit a total of $50,000. Put all the funds in the investment account.
  • Bonus: $1,000 new-customer bonus + $500 investment account bonus, for a total of $1,500.
  • Estimated return: Add about $375 in interest over three months for an estimated total return of $1,875; the three-month return is about 3.75%, equivalent to an annualized return of about 15%.

This option adds an investment account but does not require an investment management account. Pay close attention to the timing: all three accounts must be open by December 18, and you must fund them 30 days after opening. Note that HSBC Securities’ cash deposits already earn 3.7% APY, so you can skip Premier Savings.

$2,000 bonus: $150,000 in funds, held for about 3 months, approximately 8.3% return

  • What to do: Open Premier Checking and a self-directed brokerage account, and deposit a total of $150,000. Put all the funds in the investment account.
  • Bonus: $1,500 Checking new-customer bonus + $500 investment account bonus, for a total of $2,000.
  • Estimated return: Assuming all $150,000 earns an annual return of about 3%, three months of interest would be about $1,125. Add the $2,000 account-opening bonus for an estimated total return of about $3,125, or about 2.08% over three months and a simple annualized return of about 8.3%.

The timing requirements are the same as for the $1,500 tier.

Other options: If you have a lot of money and are especially interested in HSBC, you can deposit more and earn up to $3,000 + $1,000 in bonuses. In this case, I recommend funding the self-directed account through ACATS to reach the $500,000 tier. Be sure to confirm with a representative whether ACATS transfers qualify for double dipping.

Finally, prepare your account-opening documents: Proof of identity, your actual residential address, a mobile phone number, any applicable tax identification number, and possibly a bank statement or proof of address (which may be needed later).

Step 2: Apply online for HSBC Premier Checking

What to do: Go to HSBC through the HSBC Premier bonus link, enter your personal information, and submit your Premier Checking application. There’s no need to call or visit a local HSBC branch; applying and verifying online is the fastest option.

Follow the bonus link, confirm that the landing page shows the current $1,000–$3,000 new-customer promotion, and then start your application. You’ll primarily provide your identity, residential address, contact information, employment and income details, tax status, and the purpose of the account. HSBC may verify your identity using your credit history, questions based on public records, document uploads, or a selfie taken on your phone. Try to make sure your address matches your existing official documents to avoid repeated manual checks later. If you’re opening a Premier account from China, Hong Kong, or another country or region, you can also read this article:

During the application, you may be asked whether you want to open a Savings account too. If you do, you can keep cash you don’t need right away in the savings account instead of leaving a large balance in a checking account that typically pays no interest. The Relationship APY is variable; check HSBC’s current rates and eligibility requirements when you open the account. However, if you plan to open an HSBC Securities account anyway, you can skip Savings and move all the money to HSBC Securities to earn the automatic Cash Sweep yield, currently 3.7% APY.

Be sure to save your Application ID, confirmation email, and a copy of the bonus page you saw when applying. HSBC’s process can sometimes be slow. An immediate approval is ideal, but if the page shows Review, Under Review, or Pending, your application is generally being reviewed. Just make a note of the Application ID in your email.

Step 3: Get through HSBC’s review

What to do: Check HSBC’s review emails and provide any requested documents. If you haven’t heard anything about three business days after submitting them, call proactively to follow up, with your Application ID handy.

When I opened an HSBC account myself, my application also went into review and I was asked to provide additional documents. After you submit an application, the bank may email you within one or two business days asking you to call to verify your identity or upload a bank or credit card statement showing your address. A representative may also ask where your funds come from and how you plan to use the account, especially whether you intend to use a personal account for business. Just answer truthfully and upload the requested documents. A friend’s account-opening process—from application to submitting additional documents and final approval—took about half a month, so there’s no need to worry if HSBC doesn’t approve your application instantly.

If your application is under review and you haven’t received an update after three business days, you can do the following:

  1. Find the Application ID in your application confirmation email and check whether you missed any requests from HSBC for additional documents.
  2. Call HSBC’s official customer service line at 1-877-222-8218 or 716-926-6739. Explain that you applied online for Premier Checking and want to check your application status.
  3. If the representative can’t resolve the issue, ask how to follow up with the assigned Case Manager. Contact them again after one business day to confirm that your case is moving forward.
  4. In rare cases, someone may be told by phone that their account was approved, but receive a denial by email. There’s no need to waste time calling again; simply submit a new application.

After your account is approved, HSBC will send emails with account-opening details and instructions for enrolling in online banking. You can usually log in and view your Checking account and any Savings account you applied for before your physical debit card arrives. When I opened my account previously, I moved funds into Relationship Savings and did receive interest calculated at the Relationship APY. You’ll receive an email with the details.

Step 4: Open an HSBC Securities Self-Directed Investment Account

What to do: Confirm that your Premier Checking account is open and that you can log in to online banking, then apply for an HSBC Securities Self-Directed Brokerage account and confirm your eligibility for the New to Wealth offer.

You can open an HSBC Securities account by phone or online; applying online is more convenient. Once your Checking account is open, you can apply through HSBC online banking or the app. If you can’t find the application link, you can also call

  • Wealth Services Desk: 888-809-3802 (within the U.S.)

to ask how to open a Self-Directed Brokerage account and confirm your current bonus eligibility. When you reach a representative, explain that you already have Premier Checking and want to open a Self-Directed Brokerage account, not a Managed Portfolio or Spectrum account.

To qualify for the investment account offer, you must not have an existing HSBC Securities investment account that meets the offer’s definition as of August 31, 2026; open a new account by December 18; transfer the required amount of eligible assets by December 31; and keep them in the account through March 31, 2027. You must also remain subscribed to marketing emails as required by the offer. Be sure to plan your timing accordingly.

After opening the account, you’ll see that the HSBC Securities Cash Sweep offers 3.2% APY (it later increased to $3.7%). So if you open a Securities account, you don’t need to open a Premier Savings account as well.

Step 5: Transfer Funds to Meet the Checking and Securities Requirements

What to do: Transfer new funds from an external account or eligible investment assets to HSBC, and confirm how the balance is calculated for each offer.

This is the most important step in the article. HSBC’s new-customer offers allow balances in eligible deposit and investment accounts to count toward the Qualifying Balance, so understanding how this works can reduce the amount of money you need to tie up. One pool of money, two bonuses!

Based on the information we’ve gathered so far, a friend asked an HSBC branch manager and was told that new funds from an external account can first be transferred to Premier Checking, then moved from Checking into the investment account, and still count toward the investment account offer. So you can follow the steps below for each offer tier.

$1,000 bonus (new Premier Checking and Premier Relationship Savings accounts)

  • Transfer $50,000 from an external account to Premier Checking.
  • Move all the funds to Premier Savings to earn an APY of more than 3%.
  • Wait for the $1,000 bonus to post.

If you don’t want to deal with opening and funding an investment account, this is the easiest option. The annual yield is also decent, and the requirements are manageable. You just need to open and fund the account by December 31.

$1,500/$2,000 bonus (new Premier Checking and self-directed brokerage accounts)

  • Transfer a total of $50,000 to Premier Checking.
  • Move the money into the self-directed account to earn 3.7% APY through the Cash Sweep. You can also invest it if you’re interested.
  • Wait for the $1,000/$1,500 new-customer bonus plus the $500 investment account bonus to post.

This option adds an investment account. Make sure all three accounts are open by December 18, and fund the investment account 30 days after opening it.

One thing to note: It’s best to leave $100 in Premier Checking to avoid having the account closed if its balance drops to $0.

Step 6: Keep the Funds in Place and Wait for Both Bonuses

What to do: Don’t let your eligible assets fall below the bonus threshold before the applicable dates. Then wait for the bonuses to arrive.

The two bonuses have different measurement periods, which is easy to confuse. For Checking, the measurement period is the three full calendar months after the month you open the account. For Securities, you must keep the funds in the account through March 31, 2027.

Here’s the Checking bonus timeline:

  • Checking account opening and new funds: Open the account by December 31 and complete the qualifying deposit within 30 days of opening it.
  • Maintaining the Checking balance: If you open the account in October, you need to maintain the qualifying balance throughout November, December, and the following January.
  • Checking bonus: The bonus may take up to 8 weeks to post after you meet all the requirements. If you open the account in October, you’ll usually have to wait until around March 2027.

Here’s the Securities bonus timeline:

  • Securities account opening: Complete by December 18, 2026.
  • Securities funding: Complete by December 31, 2026.
  • Maintaining Securities assets: Keep them in the account through March 31, 2027.
  • Securities bonus: After you meet all the requirements, the bonus will be deposited into Checking by May 31, 2027, at the latest.

Also note that Premier Checking generally waives the monthly fee during the month you open the account and the next three calendar months. After that, if you don’t meet the requirements to avoid the fee, you may be charged $50. I recommend waiting until both bonuses have actually posted before deciding whether to withdraw your funds. If you’re concerned about the monthly fee, a $5,000 Direct Deposit will waive it. HSBC is very flexible; almost any ACH transfer counts as DD. See the guide below for details:

How Can Non-U.S. Residents Apply for HSBC Premier?

Those who already have HSBC Premier in China or Hong Kong can also apply for HSBC Premier in the US. Members of our Knowledge Planet community have successfully applied for US accounts using a genuine overseas address, a passport, and local tax documents. For detailed instructions on opening an account across borders and successful data points, see:

Here are two additional questions that overseas users may be asked. Also, note that HSBC Securities is available only to US residents, so overseas users won’t be eligible for that part of the rewards.

You will then be asked to provide additional supporting documents.

Overall, this HSBC promotion offers a good return, and after opening an account, you can put your money in a high-yield account or an investment account to earn more. There are minimum funding requirements, of course, but if you have extra cash, this may be worth considering to make better use of it.
