【Updated 2025.9】EVUS will begin charging a registration fee starting on September 30, 2025. The registration fee will be $30. So if you need to register, it’s best to do it soon. We recommend that anyone holding a 10-year B1/B2 visa complete EVUS registration, since it will no longer be free afterward.

  • Who it applies to: This new rule applies to all Chinese citizens who are required to complete EVUS registration.

What Is EVUS?

Starting November 29, 2016, holders of passports issued by the People’s Republic of China with a 10-year B1, B2, or B1/B2 visa are required to update their biographic and other information from their visa application online every two years, or when they receive a new passport, whichever comes first. This system is called EVUS, the Electronic Visa Update System. Before the EVUS online update system launched in November 2016, no action was required. Over the following year, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) provided updated information to visa holders. How to Complete EVUS

  • Change the language in the upper-right corner to Chinese.

  • Select either Individual Enrollment or Group Enrollment.

  • Disclaimer: After choosing Individual Enrollment, review the disclaimer carefully to confirm that you qualify.

  • Travel document information: Enter your passport information. Note that all dates in the form use the order day-month-year. Select the 10-year business/tourist visa option. Your visa number is the red number printed on your B1/B2 visa. If your passport or visa information is entered incorrectly, you will not be able to get past this step, so double-check everything carefully.

  • Registrant information: For the applicant’s address, employment, parents, and similar details, enter Chinese characters where the form specifically asks for Chinese. Everything else can be entered in pinyin. However, the Chinese fields are not marked with an asterisk, so they may be optional.

  • Travel information: If you are visiting the U.S. for travel, you are obviously not transiting through the U.S. Just fill in the address of your U.S. contact. Your emergency contact can be either in China or in the U.S.

  • Eligibility questions: For questions such as whether you have any diseases or have participated in terrorist activities, select No.

  • Review enrollment: Check each item of information carefully.

  • Submit application: Once you confirm the information is correct, you can submit it. You will receive an enrollment application number here; write it down so you can use it later to check your application status.

  • Application approved: At first, the status will show as pending. A few minutes later, it should be approved and change to enrolled. It will also show an expiration date two years later, and you can renew it at that time.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Submitting an application is currently free, though it has long been expected that a fee would be added later.
  • Keep your confirmation number in a safe place; you can use it on the homepage to check your status.
  • Try to complete this before traveling to the U.S., just in case there is any issue with your application.
  • EVUS must be updated every two years, and it also needs to be updated if you get a new passport.
  • Only holders of a U.S. 10-year B1/B2 visa need to complete EVUS. Holders of other visas, such as F or J visas, do not need to do this.
  • If you do not yet have a visa, you must first obtain a U.S. 10-year B1/B2 visa.
