Here’s my experience.

First, while your account is pending verification, you can still refer people normally. eToro’s terms do not say that an unverified referral link affects the signup bonus for either party, so I believe you can still bring your friends in as usual during that time.

Second, if you eventually want to withdraw the referral bonus, including the $50 you received through someone else’s referral, you still need to complete account verification. The verification process is also very simple. You need to provide ID and proof of address. eToro’s verification page says it requires a U.S. government-issued ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.) and a U.S. address (actually, a Chinese passport + U.S. address also works).

Finally, the verification process is pretty fast.

Many people may give up because they need to provide their own ID and address information. But linking a bank account and providing your SSN is already pretty revealing. Whether you want to go one step further and verify is up to you.

My verification process:

  • Day0: Registered an account, was asked to verify, and could still refer people
  • Day1: Since my driver’s license had expired, I provided my Chinese passport + an AMEX credit card statement (the statement was an extra document I submitted to prove my U.S. address). I was told the review would be completed within three business days.
  • Day3: Received an email saying verification was approved. In the meantime, I also received several referrals from readers (thank you).
