[12/8 Update] Newegg can no longer use gift cards to buy other gift cards!!!
Deal Overview
Right now Groupon is selling Newegg gift cards. With code: local20, you could get $100/$50 Newegg gift cards for 20% off, bundled with a 1-year/6-month Newegg membership. At the same time, the cashback site Ebates was also offering 10% cashback at Groupon. And Newegg gift cards could be used on the Newegg website to buy many other gift cards, such as eBay and Visa gift cards, and even Groupon gift cards.
Because the code has expired, you can now only spend 100 on Groupon to buy a 100 Newegg gift card, and then get $10 cashback from Ebates. That works out to buying a Newegg gift card at 10% off (= an eBay gift card at 10% off) + a 1-year Newegg membership.
12/1 update: using code save10 on Groupon gets you 10% off. So it works out to paying $81 for a 100 Newegg gift card. Newegg gift cards can be used to buy other gift cards sold by Newegg, such as eBay and Visa gift cards.
Detailed Steps
Prepare Your Accounts
A Newegg account is not a big deal, but it is recommended that you first set up your Ebates and Groupon accounts so you can do everything in one go.
- Click here to sign up for an Ebates account (new users get a $10 gift card, including options such as Walmart, Target, Macy's, etc.)
- Click here to sign up for a Groupon account
- Click here to sign up for a Newegg account
Step by Step
- Log in to your Ebates account and search for Groupon. You should see that Groupon is offering 10% cashback.
- Click shop now to go to Groupon, search for Newegg, and choose either the $50 or $100 Newegg gift card + membership.
- At checkout, enter code: save10, and you will see the 10% discount applied automatically. The 20% off code shown in the image has already expired.
- Complete the purchase. After about an hour, Ebates should track the transaction.
- Go to the Newegg website and buy the gift cards you want. Click here to see the full list.
- eBay gift cards
- Visa gift cards
- Kmart gift cards
- CVS gift cards
- When purchasing, enter the Newegg gift card you received in your Groupon account (click view voucher, then enter the code and pin).
- If you bought an eBay gift card, you can refer to this article, "Profit from eBay Gift Cards," to cash out, or use it to buy other useful gift cards on eBay.
Cost Breakdown
Because the code has expired, you can now only spend 100 on Groupon to buy a 100 Newegg gift card, and then get $10 cashback from Ebates. That works out to buying a Newegg gift card at 10% off (= an eBay gift card at 10% off) + a 1-year Newegg membership.
With save10, after cashback, it works out to buying a Newegg gift card at 20% off.
Buying regular gift cards
- Spend $80 on Groupon to buy the gift card (the code has expired, so now you can only buy at full price)
- Get back: $8 (Ebates) + $100 in useful gift cards
- Profit: $28 (because the code has expired, now you can only get the $8 from Ebates, xia)
Assume you buy a Visa gift card on Newegg (usable anywhere that accepts Visa credit cards)
- Spend $80 on Groupon for the gift card + $9 Visa gift card fee on Newegg
- Get back: $8 (Ebates) + $100 Visa gift card
- Profit: $10
Things to Note
- Each Groupon account can only buy one $50 and one $100 card. If you open multiple accounts, your order may fail. Using credit cards with different billing information or names may avoid this.
- Newegg gift cards have purchase limits. The limits are listed on the gift card product pages, and the limit resets within 48 hours.
- If you want to buy Groupon gift cards on Newegg, note that Groupon gift cards are loaded into a specific account for use. So if you want to do this deal with a new Groupon account, it is recommended to load at most 100, to cover the 120 needed for the $100 + $50 purchase.
