The reason is that these universities allegedly conspired to limit financial aid amounts, causing students to receive less aid than they otherwise would have absent the alleged collusion.

It is estimated that each student may receive $2,000 in compensation.
To qualify, you must meet the following requirements:
- You were enrolled as a full-time undergraduate at one of the specified universities as a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- You received at least some need-based financial aid from a defendant
- In any undergraduate academic year, your tuition, room, or board was not fully covered by the school, meaning you paid part of the cost yourself
The applicable time periods are as follows:
- University of Chicago, Columbia University, Cornell University, Duke University, Georgetown University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, University of Notre Dame, Rice University, Vanderbilt University, and Yale University: from Fall 2003 through the date of the court's preliminary approval of the settlements
- Brown University, Dartmouth College, and Emory University: from Fall 2004 through the date of the court's preliminary approval of the settlements
- California Institute of Technology: from Fall 2019 through the date of the court's preliminary approval of the settlements
- Johns Hopkins University: from Fall 2021 through the date of the court's preliminary approval of the settlements
People who are not eligible include:
- Any officers and/or directors of the defendants, or any current or former employees whose positions included assistant or deputy vice president, executive director, or director in the financial aid and admissions offices, any dean or associate dean, or any employee working in the defendants' internal legal offices;
- The judge presiding over this case and the judge's court staff, spouse, and relatives within the third degree who live with the judge, as well as those relatives' spouses.
If you qualify, it is worth submitting a claim, since the potential payout is fairly substantial.
