About Citi Strata Elite
Citi Strata Elite is a premium credit card launched in July 2025. It has a $595 annual fee and a welcome bonus of 100,000 ThankYou Points (TYP). The card comes with a variety of travel-related perks and statement credits, and it is also a strong everyday card for dining. Its points are highly flexible, and the addition of transfers to AA miles has significantly increased their value. Among premium cards, I think this one offers the best overall value and is also relatively easy to get. For most people with travel needs, it can even be worth holding long term. So in this article, I’ll break down from multiple angles why I think this card is well worth applying for, especially toward the end of the year.

1. Welcome bonus: 100,000 points
When this card first launched, the online welcome offer was 80,000 points, while only in-branch applications could get 100,000 points. Since early October, the online offer has also increased to 100,000 ThankYou Points. The spending requirement is $6,000 within 3 months, which averages out to $2,000 per month and is relatively easy to meet—especially during the October–December shopping season, when Black Friday and Christmas spending can help you finish the requirement quickly. At the same time, Christmas and New Year also tend to bring plenty of travel spending, making this card a great fit.
In terms of value, 100,000 ThankYou Points is an excellent bonus. After this refresh, ThankYou Points can now transfer directly to AA miles at a 1:1 ratio. Right now, AA miles are more valuable than UA/Delta miles and also easier to earn than Alaska miles. They are especially useful for booking business-class award tickets between the U.S. and China or the U.S. and Japan. This 100,000-point welcome bonus is roughly enough for two business-class redemptions (worth nearly $10,000) or more than one first-class redemption (worth nearly $20,000). Of course, even using a more conservative valuation, it is not hard to get around 1.5 cents per point from AA miles, so 100,000 ThankYou Points are worth at least $1,500.
- Chicago to Tokyo nonstop in JAL business class costs only 60,000 AA miles (60,000 ThankYou Points)
- Dallas to Tokyo nonstop in JAL first class costs only 80,000 AA miles (80,000 ThankYou Points)
2. Relatively low annual fee
While the $595 annual fee may look intimidating at first, it is actually not high by premium-card standards. Compare it with Chase, another major bank: its flagship Chase Sapphire Reserve has a $795 annual fee, while the AMEX Platinum comes with an even steeper $895 annual fee. So this card is clearly a tier lower on annual fee. In addition, one unique feature of this card is that it can pair with Citi Gold or Private Checking to substantially reduce the annual fee. If you are a Citi Gold or Private Client customer, you can get a $145 annual fee discount every year; additionally, Private Client customers get the full $595 waived in the first year.
Looking at it another way, the card also offers an annual $300 hotel credit and a $200 AA or Best Buy credit, both of which are easy to use (more on that below). If you subtract both, you are effectively paying just a $95 annual fee to hold this premium card. That is on par with many mid-tier and co-branded cards on the market today, such as Citi Premier, Sapphire Preferred, AA, and UA cards, which all have annual fees of around $100. In other words, for an effective annual fee of about $100, you get premium-card travel benefits—an excellent deal.
Taken together, these two angles make the card’s overall value proposition extremely strong.
3. High-value, highly flexible points
ThankYou Points now have many transfer partners, and the airline partners are especially practical. Here are several that are particularly useful for Chinese Americans in the U.S. The transfer ratio for the options below is 1:1. For business- and first-class award tickets, ThankYou Points can easily be worth 2.5 cents per point or more.
- AA: In 2025, Citi finally added transfers to AA miles. AA miles are especially valuable for booking JAL business and first class between the U.S. and China or the U.S. and Japan. U.S.–Japan business class costs 60,000 miles, and first class costs 80,000 miles—an outstanding deal.
- Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer: A good way to book Singapore Airlines business class or Suites/first class flights back to China at relatively low rates. It is also a transfer partner of Membership Rewards/Ultimate Rewards/SPG, so the points are easy to accumulate, and there is no extra fee for booking close-in award tickets. One-way flights back to China are relatively expensive, though, at 52,500/102,500/132,500 miles.
- Avianca (LifeMiles): It can basically serve as a smaller-scale substitute for UA, but customer service can be very difficult to deal with, so be prepared.
- Turkish Airlines: Some short-haul redemptions are excellent values.
- Asia Miles: Can be used to book Cathay Pacific flights back to China, and the pricing is fairly reasonable. However, during holiday periods, award space is usually almost impossible to find (yes, even booking far in advance does not guarantee anything; instead, CX may suddenly release award seats a few weeks before departure).
- EVA Air Infinity MileageLands: Can be used for flights back to China, but the value is poor. Economy, business, and first class cost 115,000/175,000/210,000 miles respectively.
- Virgin Atlantic Flying Club: Has the potential for excellent awards back to China. It is also a transfer partner of Membership Rewards/Ultimate Rewards/SPG, so miles are easy to earn, and it has many partner redemption options, though the restrictions can be significant.
- Air France/KLM Flying Blue: Promo Rewards at the start of each month can offer extremely cheap awards to Europe, so don’t miss them if Europe is on your list. For flights back to China, you can redeem on China Eastern and China Southern. Fuel surcharges apply, but they are not too high.
For hotel partners, they may be worth considering when there is a transfer bonus. Standard transfer value is usually average.
- Choice Hotels, Accor, Le Club, and I Prefer Hotel can sometimes deliver unexpectedly strong value during promotions.
In addition, you can combine all of your Citi ThankYou Points-earning cards to unlock better overall value.
4. Strong earning rates
This card earns 12x points on hotels, car rentals, and activities booked through Citi Travel. If you value the points at 1.5 cents each, that is equivalent to an 18% return. Every booking is effectively like getting 18% back, so you usually do not need to compare prices on other sites. Airfare bookings earn 6x, which works out to a 9% return—also quite good. Another highlight of this card is that dining can earn up to 6x points, which is especially appealing during the season when many people are enjoying fine dining. Regular restaurant spending earns 3x.
One hidden perk is that this card’s 6x dining category can also be triggered through certain apps. For example, in the DoorDash app, there are many third-party gift cards for sale, such as Amazon, Visa gift cards, Sephora, and more. You just need to time it correctly: after 6 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, use your Strata Elite card in the app to buy gift cards. That works out to an effective 9% back at Amazon, which is a great deal for people who shop at Amazon frequently.
5. Strong travel benefits
Citi Strata Elite is also very well rounded for travel. You earn 12x on hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked through Citi Travel, 6x on airfare, 6x on dining and delivery on Friday and Saturday nights, 3x on dining at other times, and 1.5x on all other purchases. So it offers strong rewards across many travel-related spending categories. On top of that, the card includes a $300 annual hotel credit, a $200 Splurge Credit that can be used with AA, and a $200 Blacklane premium rides credit. For cardholders with at least some travel needs, these credits alone can go a long way toward offsetting the annual fee. In addition, the card comes with Priority Pass membership, with unlimited complimentary visits for the primary cardholder and up to two guests per visit. It also includes 4 passes to AA’s own airport lounges. There is also a Global Entry / TSA PreCheck application fee credit of up to $120. For luxury hotels, Citi has launched The Reserve by Citi Travel. Booking through this channel gives you perks such as a $100 property credit, complimentary breakfast for two, early check-in, late checkout, room upgrades, and more, similar to AMEX FHR. The card also provides travel protections including Trip Delay Protection, Enhanced Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption Protection, Lost or Damaged Luggage, and MasterRental Coverage (rental car insurance). If you pay with this card, a variety of losses can be covered when unexpected situations arise. Overall, it performs very well across airfare, hotels, dining, airport lounges, rental cars, and travel insurance. It is a very solid travel credit card.
As for the Blacklane $200 credit, there is currently a very good use case that lets you stack a $100 discount on top. If you sign up for Blacklane through a BofA link, you can get $100 off your first ride, followed by $20 off each of the next 10 rides. This discount is deposited directly into your Blacklane account after registration, and it does not require any specific payment card, so paying with Citi Strata Elite lets you stack it perfectly with the $100 reimbursement. If you’re savvy, you probably already know the move: create multiple Blacklane accounts and save them for future credits.
- Promo link (It says you need BofA Diamond Honors to use it, but in practice it does not verify whether you actually have that status.)
6. The $300 hotel credit is easy to use
With AMEX FHR and Chase Edit hotel credits, you generally need to book upper-midscale or luxury hotels to use the credit, and nightly rates after tax are often $300+. These hotel programs are also fairly limited and not that widely distributed. But Citi Strata Elite’s hotel credit is much broader. You only need to book through Citi Travel, and it works whether you book a high-end, mid-range, or budget hotel. If you want to keep it simple, you can even find a two-night stay totaling around $300 and make it essentially free. Even better, if you do not use up the hotel credit in one booking, you can continue using the remainder later. Another small trick: if you need to book four nights, you can book two nights at the end of 2025, then after the hotel credit resets in 2026, book the other two nights.
For someone who takes two or three trips a year, using up this $300 hotel credit should be pretty easy.
7. The $200 Splurge Credit is easy to use
This Splurge credit includes four merchants: Live Nation, Ticketmaster, American Airlines, and Best Buy. You can choose two of them as your eligible merchants, and purchases with either selected merchant will automatically trigger the credit. The credit is based on the calendar year, and you need to first log in at citi.com/splurgecredit to choose your merchants.
In my view, American Airlines and Best Buy are by far the most useful options. With American Airlines, you can buy airfare or stock up on gift cards. Best Buy stores carry a large selection of third-party gift cards, including Visa gift cards and even Amazon, so it should be very easy to use.
8. Apply near year-end and get credits three times
There is actually another hidden advantage to applying for this card near the end of the year. Both the hotel credit and the Splurge credit are based on the calendar year. For example, if you apply in October 2025, you can get the 2025 credits of $300 + $200. Then once they reset in January 2026, you can get another $500 total in credits. If you keep the card until October 2026 and pay the second annual fee of $595, then when January 2027 arrives, you get another $500 in credits again. If you do not want to keep the card long term, you can downgrade it to a no-annual-fee Citi card such as Citi Double Cash, and the second-year annual fee will be refunded on a prorated basis.
Let’s calculate the value and cost of this strategy.
- Value: three rounds of $300 + $200 credits, for a total of $1,500
- Cost: first-year annual fee of $595 + second-year fee of $595/12*2 (two months of prorated annual fee) = $695
It is easy to see that the credits far exceed the annual fees you pay. In effect, you get to hold this premium card for 1 year and 2 months almost for free.
9. The Citi ThankYou Points ecosystem is very powerful
This is really just one premium credit card within the broader Citi ThankYou Points ecosystem. If you also have other no-annual-fee Citi credit cards and have accumulated a lot of ThankYou Points, applying for this card can unlock much more value across your entire ThankYou Points setup. It allows your ThankYou Points to transfer to airline miles or hotel points at better rates, while Citi’s other cards can complement it on the earning side.
For example, if you have Citi Double Cash, you can earn 2x ThankYou Points on all purchases. If you then combine those points with Citi Strata Elite, you can redeem them at a value of 1.5 cents per point. That is effectively 3% back.
2x on all purchases, no annual fee!
- Welcome bonus: $200 (spend $1,500 in 6 months)
- Rewards: 1x+1x (earn 1x points when you make a purchase, plus another 1x when you pay it off)

- Annual fee: $0

If you also have the Citi Custom Cash card, you can earn 5x TYP in your top eligible spending category. Combined with this card, that works out to an effective 7.5% return.
Automatically earn 5% cash back in your top eligible spending category; no annual fee!
- Welcome bonus: 20,000 ThankYou Points (spend $1,500 in the 6 months before account opening)

- Redemption: Can be redeemed directly for cash back, or transferred to airline miles if you also have a premium card
- Annual fee: $0

10. 4506 easter egg
One last bonus detail. As we mentioned before, some applicants for this card received a 4506c request from Citi asking them to provide income information and tax returns, and their card was immediately locked so they could not make purchases or complete the spending requirement for the welcome bonus. Citi offered a pretty solid accommodation: for affected users, the first-year $595 annual fee was waived outright, and the 100,000-point welcome bonus was awarded with no spending requirement at all. So you can feel comfortable applying for this card. Either you do not get a 4506c and can use the card normally, or you do get a 4506c and then receive the bonus and annual fee waiver for free.
If only applying for this card also came with a chance to win a grand prize!
Summary
After looking at it this way, this card was already a good long-term fit for people with at least some travel needs. But within the year, the end of the year is also the best time to apply, since you can pay a little more than one year's annual fee in exchange for three $500 credits. Right now, the welcome bonus on this card is still 100,000 points, up from 80,000 points previously, so this is a great opportunity to pick up this card.
