According to a report from pymnt, both AMEX and Synchrony are vying for the right to issue Amazon’s consumer co-branded card, with the goal of replacing Chase. That’s understandable, though. For Amazon, the current setup is a bit awkward: its consumer card is issued by Chase, its business card is issued by AMEX, and its Amazon store card is issued by Synchrony. The benefits also differ across these cards.
That said, I think it’s better to keep things split up. Competition leads to better welcome offers. If one issuer has a monopoly, the benefits would likely be reduced. On the other hand, if Chase drops out of the running, then at least the Amazon consumer card would no longer be affected by 5/24, which would open it up to many more applicants.
