When you’re deep into credit cards and points and something seems uncertain, try using the “scheming proof-by-contradiction method”!
Main idea: Please don’t look down on slippery-slope reasoning. Used in moderation, slippery-slope reasoning can be reliable and reasonable. But please don’t over-abuse it and turn it into a slippery-slope fallacy, where somehow every problem can be blamed on Benzema!
In this video, Lizi gives everyone four thought-provoking examples:
1. International checked baggage allowances are usually two 50lbs bags. Why can’t the weight be redistributed between them?
2. For 12306’s “Railway Travel” points tickets, can you cancel for free?
3. In the U.S., airline tickets often come with a 24h free cancellation/change policy. How exactly is that 24h calculated? If you have already changed the ticket once, does that change reset the 24h cooldown timer?
4. When filing taxes across multiple states, why does income from W-2 forms issued by employers in different states have to be added together on a single federal Form 1040, instead of filing one federal Form 1040 for each state?
You can use this line of reasoning and extend it further to think about why so many programs set up their T&C in one way or another.
