About the Luxury Card rewards program
Luxury Card Rewards points can be redeemed for cash back or airfare. The Gold Card provides 2% redemption value for either option.
- Redeem at 2% value for airfare or cash back. For example, when you redeem 50,000 points you will get $1,000 value for airfare or cash back, issued as a direct deposit statement credit.
- 2% Value for Cash Back Redemptions: Cash back can be deposited directly into a US bank account or applied as a statement credit. No minimum threshold requirement for cash back redemptions.
- Get rewarded every time you spend. Choose between cash back or airfare redemption with your preferred airline, and go even further with unlimited points, blackout-free booking and points that never expire.
My take
The Gold Card is a premium credit card with a clear purpose. Rather than relying on an oversized welcome offer to attract applicants, it combines rewards, travel benefits, hotel perks, and premium services in one card. The 24K gold-plated design is especially uncommon among U.S. credit cards. It may appeal to people who like metal cards and value the card’s design and feel.
The Gold Card uses the same rewards program as the Black Card. It does not have airline or hotel transfer partners like AMEX MR or Chase UR. However, the Gold Card makes redemptions more straightforward: points are worth the same amount when redeemed for cash or airfare, at 2 cents per point. You might as well redeem for cash: the value is the same, and cash is more flexible. The issuer says points have no set expiration date and there is no standard cap on points earned. Still, I recommend redeeming your points before closing the account.
Looking at the math, the $1,199 annual fee is offset by $300 in airline credits and $200 in dining credits, for a total of $500. If you also use the Ship&Play service enough to get the full additional $200 credit, the total rises to $700, leaving an effective annual fee of $499. This calculation assumes you can use the credits at their full value without spending extra just to earn them.
Keep in mind that $700 is the maximum amount of credits available each year, not $700 in cash handed to you. The $200 Ship&Play credit is unusual: if you already need to check bags or ship sports equipment, it can save you money. If you never use these services, you should not count the $200 as cash value. For example, the credit can help with shipping suitcases, golf clubs, or ski equipment ahead of a trip.
I think the Gold Card is a good long-term fit for these types of cardholders:
- People who often travel with family or friends: Priority Pass still includes benefits at select airport restaurants, and the card offers unlimited visits for the cardholder and accompanying guests. This can be especially useful for families who travel in groups, compared with cards that allow only one or two free guests.
- People who often stay at luxury hotels: If you already stay at Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental, or other upscale hotels, the breakfast, upgrades, hotel credits, and concierge service through Luxury Card Travel can improve your stay.
- People who often travel with lots of luggage or sports equipment: If golf or ski trips mean you already need luggage-shipping services, the Gold Card’s additional $200 Ship&Play Credit may be easier to use.
- People who want a premium cash-back card for the long term: There is no need to navigate complicated points transfers; everyday spending earns a straightforward 2% back. If you often book airfare or hotels through Luxury Card Travel, you can earn 4% back on those purchases.
The Gold Card is a metal card with 24K gold plating and supports contactless payments. Its appearance and materials are distinctive compared with ordinary metal credit cards. Luxury Card Travel’s hotel benefits also remind me of the AMEX FHR program, although room upgrades are subject to availability and the actual value depends on the hotel and booking. I also like that the Global Entry / TSA PreCheck application fee credit extends to the primary cardholder and eligible authorized users, which is more generous than cards that offer it only to the primary cardholder. Before relying on travel insurance or cell phone protection, I would read the Benefits Guide for the claim requirements and coverage limits.
Compared with the Black Card, the Gold Card costs $500 more per year in annual fees, but provides $100 more in airline credits, $100 more in dining credits, and an additional $200 Ship&Play Credit. If you use all three additional benefits, the effective annual fee after the regular credits is only $100 higher for the Gold Card than for the Black Card. The Gold Card also offers 2 cents per point when redeemed for cash, compared with just 1.5 cents per point for the Black Card. If you spend $20,000 a year on everyday purchases, the Gold Card can earn you $100 more in cash back than the Black Card.
One important difference between the cards right now is that the Black Card recently introduced a limited-time 75,000-point welcome offer, while the Gold Card does not currently have the same offer. If your main goal is earning a welcome bonus, the Black Card is a better fit. But if you plan to keep the card long term, prefer straightforward 2% cash back, and can make good use of the Gold Card’s additional travel benefits, the Gold Card has its own merits.
One final note about Priority Pass: Many premium credit cards have removed airport restaurant benefits or started limiting the number of free guests, while Luxury Card continues to offer these benefits. For people who frequently visit participating airports, this may be one of the most valuable benefits for keeping the card long term. Policies can vary by lounge or airport restaurant, though, so check the Priority Pass website or app before visiting.

In conclusion, Luxury Card is a premium credit card that is all about simplicity. Luxury Card concentrates the value of rewards at redemption rather than requiring cardmembers to optimize where they spend, as many other complex credit card programs do. As a result, Luxury Card is an everyday, top-of-wallet card that can be used broadly without giving up premium travel, protection, and insurance benefits across a wider range of purchases. With elevated travel perks such as widespread airport lounge access, travel concierge services, and easy-to-redeem rewards, Luxury Card has a strong position in the travel and premium credit card spaces. Barclays application guide
The Gold Card is issued by Barclays Bank Delaware, and its application requirements are similar to those for other Barclays credit cards. As a premium card, however, the issuer recommends that applicants have a good credit history. Barclays also pays close attention to recent credit reports, the number of recently opened accounts, and hard inquiries. Here are a few points to keep in mind:
- Barclays credit card applications generally involve a TransUnion (TU) inquiry, but this can vary by location.
- If you already have another Barclays credit card, you may need to adjust your existing credit limit when you apply.
- If your application is denied, you can try calling the reconsideration line at 866-408-4064. Explain why you applied and provide details about your income and credit history. Some applications may be reconsidered through a manual review.
- The publicly available standard application materials for the Gold Card do not currently list a welcome offer. Before applying, check the final application page for the latest offer; do not assume that the Black Card’s 75,000-point offer applies.
