Overview of the Luxury Card Rewards Program

Luxury Card points can be redeemed for cash or airfare, with different redemption rates for each.

  • Redeem at 2% value for airfare and 1.5% for cash back. For example, when you redeem 50,000 points you will get $1,000 value for airfare or $750 value in cash back, issued as a direct deposit statement credit.
  • 1.5% Value for Cash Back Redemptions: Cash back can be deposited directly into a US bank account or applied as a statement credit. No minimum threshold requirement for cash back redemptions.
  • Get rewarded every time you spend. Choose between cash back or airfare redemption with your preferred airline, and go even further with unlimited points, blackout-free booking and points that never expire.

Cardholders can use the redemption feature in their account to get cash back as a statement credit or deposit it directly into a U.S. bank Checking / Savings account. At 1.5c/p, 50,000 points are worth $750, and 75,000 points are worth $1,125.

Redeeming for airfare offers the higher value of 2c/p. You’ll need to book through LuxuryCardTravel.com or contact Luxury Card customer service to arrange the redemption. For example, 50,000 points can get you $1,000 worth of airfare, while 75,000 points can be worth up to $1,500. These are regular paid tickets, not award tickets booked with airline miles, so you don’t need to search for award availability. You also can’t transfer Luxury Card points directly to United, AA, or another airline’s frequent flyer account.

My Take

With the limited-time 75,000-point welcome offer, I think the Mastercard Black Card is much more compelling than before. The card comes with a $699 annual fee, but the $200 airline credit and $100 dining credit each year help offset that cost. If you can spend $6,000 within 90 days, pay the annual fee in full during that period, and make good use of the credits, the welcome offer alone is worth $1,125 in cash or up to $1,500 toward airfare. That's a pretty attractive first-year value.

For long-term cardholders, I think this card makes the most sense for frequent travelers, especially those who regularly travel with family or friends. Priority Pass access is one of its biggest advantages, since it includes participating airport restaurants and unlimited complimentary guests, subject to each location's rules. Many competing premium cards limit free guest access to two people, so this can be particularly valuable for families or group travelers. Authorized users also receive their own Priority Pass access, although each additional card costs $249 per year.

Another group that could get good long-term value from this card is travelers who regularly stay at upscale hotels. Luxury Card Travel provides benefits at more than 3,000 participating hotels and resorts, including complimentary breakfast, room upgrades when available, hotel credits, and other privileges. These benefits remind me of the AMEX FHR program and can add meaningful value to hotel stays. The 24/7 concierge service is another nice perk for people who frequently need help with travel arrangements, restaurant reservations, or special experiences.

The key to keeping this card long term is making use of its benefits. If you regularly use the $200 airline credit and $100 dining credit, that's already $300 in annual value against the $699 annual fee. Add in frequent airport lounge visits, Priority Pass restaurant access, hotel privileges, and concierge services, and the card can make sense well beyond the first year. I think it's particularly appealing to travelers who would naturally use these benefits rather than going out of their way to take advantage of them.

Luxury Card’s points are fairly straightforward compared with AMEX MR or Chase UR, since there are no airline or hotel transfer partners. I find cash redemption the easiest option, and getting a fixed 1.5 cents per point in cash is quite good.

Barclays Application Guide

Barclays pays close attention to recent credit reports, the number of recently opened accounts, and hard pulls when reviewing applications. Applicants who have applied for a lot of credit cards recently may be more likely to face a manual review. Here are a few points to keep in mind:

  • Barclays credit card applications generally involve a TransUnion (TU) inquiry, but this may vary by location.
  • If you already have another Barclays credit card, you may need to adjust your existing credit limit when applying.
  • If your application is denied, you can try calling the reconsideration line at 866-408-4064. Explain why you applied and provide information about your income and credit history; some applicants may be approved after a manual review.
  • Check the linked offer terms for any restrictions on previous Luxury Card accounts or welcome bonuses; don’t assume the repeat-application strategies used for other Barclays cards will apply.
