The welcome bonus has been raised to 100,000 points, with 45,000 points after spending $1,000 within 90 days; the remaining 55,000 points require $500+ in Wyndham hotel spending within 180 days. This card also gives you 7,500 points every year just for holding it, so it can be a long-term keeper if you can use the points. Plus, new cardholders can now get Diamond status in the first year!

Also, this card has several benefits changes, and the annual fee has gone up. Details below.

  • Annual fee increased from $75 to $95
  • Diamond status in the first year
  • Gas bonus reduced from 6x to 4x
  • Added 4x on travel
  • Annual points increased to 15,000, up from 7,500 (awarded after paying the annual fee, starting in year 2)
  • New Statement Credit redemption option added, but the rate is unknown and probably won't be very high
  • $50 annual food delivery credit, issued as $25 every six months

Benefits

  • Wyndham hotel elite benefit: Get Wyndham Platinum status just for holding the card
  • [New] go free® Faster: 10% off Wyndham hotel award redemptions
  • Annual benefit: After paying the annual fee each year, you get 7,500 points (worth about $67)

Drawbacks

  • Wyndham has a huge number of roadside motels in North America, but most are fairly mediocre, so redemptions are often not very good value

Wyndham Hotel Program Overview

  • Wyndham uses tiered redemptions (7,500/15,000/30,000 points), with an estimated value of around 0.9 cents per point (10,000 points can average about $90 in hotel value)
  • In addition to standard points redemptions, Wyndham also offers points + cash redemptions, priced at 3,000 points plus some cash
  • Wyndham is still a good option in places like Hawaii, the Caribbean, and the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Super 8 and Days Inn). Wyndham Hotels and Caesars Hotels formed a partnership in June 2017, so redeeming at Caesars hotels can also be a good choice

I spent a day looking through hotels in Las Vegas.

You can see that there are still quite a few high-value hotels available in the 15,000-point tier. Picking one worth more than 1 cent per point is no problem.

Review

If you can use Wyndham hotel stays, this card offers excellent value. The top 6x earnings rate is roughly equivalent to 5.4% cash back, and the 4x categories for groceries and dining are roughly equivalent to 3.6% cash back. On top of that, the 7,500 points you get each year are worth about $67, which almost covers the annual fee.

If this card isn't worth keeping long term for you, you can consider downgrading to the no-annual-fee version, or just closing it.

Barclays Application Guide

  • Check Barclays credit card application status
  • Barclays credit card applications generally pull TransUnion (TU), and HPs on the same day can be combined
  • If you already have another Barclays card and your new application is not approved, there will usually be no hard pull
  • You can call the reconsideration line (866-408-4064) to speed up credit card approval or request another review of a denied application. They may verify your identity and address, ask why you want the card, and review your employment and repayment situation, so be prepared. You may need to move credit limit from an existing card to get approved.
