[Update 2] When this Away sale first launched, Americans rushed in and bought it out (or maybe inventory was just too limited). There were also serious issues with orders not shipping or not going through successfully. For quite a long time, the system would also eat the Store credit in your account (the $20 from refer sign-up). Now that a month has passed, that credit has finally been returned. Still, the prices are honestly too high. Better to wait for the next 50% off sale or for AMEX Green to offer reimbursement again.

[Update] It’s unclear whether Away ran low on inventory or demand was simply too strong, but many items are now Out of Stock (OOS). The cheapest carry-on suitcase and kids carry-on could be had for under $100 with refer registration, but by the next day the 50% off colors were already sold out. The deal runs through the 15th, so hopefully they restock.

Also, because order volume was so high, Away’s system kept glitching. If your order failed, or if it appeared to go through but you never received an order number, you can email [email protected]. They may be able to refund all credits and charges, and may also provide an extra $50 credit as compensation, YMMV.

Away is a luggage brand that’s very popular in the U.S. Presumably sales were weak during the pandemic, so the company launched a promotion with discounts of up to 50% off, which is an all-time low. Their luggage is usually very expensive. This is also the first sale Away has ever run since the brand was founded.

It first caught our attention because when the AMEX Green card launched last year, it offered an extra $100-$150 in Away reimbursement. Of course, that reimbursement is no longer available now.

If you really like the brand, this is the best discount we’ve seen so far. The sale ends on September 15, 2020.

Why this is interesting

Away is already very popular with American consumers, though I’m not really sure why. Personally, I do think the built-in power bank design is nice for luggage (you need to choose the Battery version, though I wouldn’t recommend a battery model for checked baggage).

But the biggest selling point is the Lifetime Limited Warranty:

Your Away luggage is covered by a lifetime limited warranty. This limited warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary by state, province, or country.

This does not conflict with the insurance offered by credit cards. For example, many personal AMEX cards with annual fees offer a Baggage Insurance Plan. If your bag is accidentally damaged or lost during transit (air/sea/land), you may be able to use both benefits. You would need to use an AMEX card to purchase a round-trip ticket.
