I received an email saying that the AMEX Delta Platinum will be getting a $50 Appreciation Credit. The timing was right after the annual fee posted; I paid the annual fee, and then a few days later this email arrived.

According to the terms, you cannot close the card or downgrade it within 45 days, otherwise the credit will be clawed back. That said, if you downgrade after 45 days, you can still get a partial annual fee refund, so it is unclear how AMEX views this.

If you have an AMEX Platinum or similar card, the distribution pattern is probably similar as well.

Terms and Conditions

$50 Statement Credit- Delta Platinum

You will be eligible to receive a one-time $50 statement credit after Card renewal. The statement credit will be applied to the eligible card account within 8-12 weeks of the account renewal month. This statement credit is limited to Basic (not Additional) Card Members only. Offer is non-transferable. If the eligible Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card is cancelled, or you have downgraded or upgraded your Card up to 45 days after the first day of your renewal month, you will not receive the one-time $50 statement credit. American Express reserves the right to modify or revoke offer at any time.

It was triggered right after paying the annual fee — AMEX is really pretty sneaky about this.
