Introduction to Amazon Prime Day

Each year, Amazon designates 1-2 days as Prime Day. During that period, and in the week leading up to it, Amazon launches a series of deals for its Prime members. This year's Amazon Prime Day is on July 12-13. If there's something you want to buy on Amazon, it's worth checking ahead of time to see whether there are any relevant deals. I’ll also keep updating good money-saving opportunities and strong deals.

Prime Day promotions are only available to Amazon Prime members. A full Prime membership costs $139/year, or you can pay monthly at $14.99/month. Monthly members can also participate in Prime Day directly. If you don’t currently have a membership, here are a few ways to get one:

In addition, if someone in your household or a friend already has Prime, they may be able to share their membership with you, which would also let you participate in Prime Day. See:

2022 Prime Day Preview

We share Prime Day deals every year. Based on prior years, you can generally expect the following promotions. Note that the first few are broad offers that can usually be stacked with item-specific deals, so if you plan to buy something, it’s a good idea to pay attention to those first and see whether you can qualify.

Place an order in the app and get a coupon

Prime Day often includes a promotion where placing an order through the Amazon app and meeting a spending threshold earns you a coupon rebate. In 2021, it was spend $600 and get $70 back. If you have a big purchase to make, it may be worth waiting for the promotion period, since this rebate can be quite substantial.

Amazon gift card promotion

Last year's Prime Day offer was spend $40 and get $10 back. By itself, that may not seem especially exciting, but if you were going to spend the money anyway, buying a gift card is basically an easy extra $10 discount.

Amazon co-branded credit card promotion

In addition, the Amazon and Chase co-branded cards often offer higher welcome bonuses during Prime Day. If you’re planning to apply, it may be worth waiting a bit. The 2022 offer has not come out yet, but it will likely go live in a few weeks.

Chase Amazon Rewards Credit Card

5% cash back at Amazon and Whole Foods; no annual fee!

  • Welcome bonus: Prime sign-up bonus: $150 gift card (issued upon card opening)
  • Rewards: 5% at Amazon, Whole Foods, and Chase Travel; 2% at restaurants, public transit, and rideshare, 2% on gas; 1% on all other purchases
  • Redemption: Cash back
  • Annual fee: $0
  • Apply now>>

Also, during Prime Day in 2021, purchases at Amazon and Whole Foods earned 6% back instead of the usual 5%, and purchases with small business merchants earned 10% back.

Third-party gift card discounts

Some gift cards for restaurants and clothing stores may also go on sale, though the savings usually are not that compelling. Quantities are limited, so you need to be ready right when the deal goes live.
