According to US Credit Card Guide, if you link a Visa card issued outside mainland China to Alipay, your in-store QR code purchases in mainland China may qualify for an extra cashback-style discount each day. Details are as follows:
- Through December 31, 2024, if you use a mainland China Alipay account linked to a Visa international card issued outside mainland China and make purchases at offline merchants in mainland China, you can get ¥3 off ¥30, ¥5 off ¥50, or ¥10 off ¥80. Each discount tier is limited to 400 redemptions per day, available on a first-come, first-served basis. You can enjoy these discounts up to 3 times per month.
The available quota is pretty limited, so if you are in China and happen to be free in the morning, it may be worth trying. It is extra savings after all.
