I was using WeChat earlier today when I suddenly discovered that the scan-to-pay screen allows you to select a U.S. credit card.
All three of my US cards can be selected. This payment screen is for merchant scans, not P2P. I tried normal merchants and it seemed to work, but payment was automatically redirected to Cash or a mainland China bank card payment; maybe WeChat is only testing it, or it may only be open for merchants with foreign-currency transactions. I suspect it’s the latter. I haven’t had a chance to test these merchants yet. If you have any updates, please share. We look forward to WeChat opening up US card payments even further.
- By the way, I’m preparing a super-comprehensive guide on using US credit cards with WeChat and Alipay. I’ve been using US cards in China long-term, and I believe this guide will be very helpful for many people! (Right now, aside from showing your payment code, WeChat can in some cases support offline scan-and-pay with US cards, and I will give examples in a follow-up article)
- WeChat is already increasingly supporting scan-and-pay with overseas credit cards (including offline), and details are here:
