Walmart has officially announced that it will launch the Walmart Plus membership and a Plus co-branded credit card. You can already see the membership logo, W+, on Walmart’s official website:

Reportedly, this move is meant to compete with Amazon Prime and the Prime co-branded credit card. Walmart’s co-branded card issuer was recently changed to Capital One, and there are both a co-branded card and a Store Card. However, first, approval has been unusually difficult, and second, even the old sign-up bonus of a few bottles of soda was discontinued, which really made the card a lot less appealing. It’s unclear what the new card’s welcome bonus will be.

【Update】The current welcome bonus on the Capital One Walmart co-branded card is spend $300, get $50 + 5% back on in-store Walmart purchases during the first year (when paying with Walmart Pay and this card), which seems quite a bit better than a few sodas.

Good competition is always better for consumers, whether that means more upside or getting squeezed less. Hopefully this Plus membership benefit will expand worldwide【probably not happening】.
