Valentine’s Day is almost here, so if you’re still thinking about buying something for your significant other, time is running out. American Airlines AAdvantage eShopping and United Airlines MileagePlus Shopping have both announced bonus promotions. Note that these promos do not officially start until January 29, so purchases made today will very likely not count. Don’t jump the gun.

The promotion deadline is based on the time of purchase. So even if you make a purchase on the last day of the promo and the Portal does not track the transaction until a week later, you should still receive the bonus miles. That said, because merchants’ system time zones can sometimes be inconsistent, we do not recommend waiting until the last few hours to make your purchase, just to avoid unnecessary disputes.

Bonus miles will be awarded 8-10 weeks after the promotion ends (yes, really that slow, mainly to get past the return window). These bonus offers are tiered, and you will receive the bonus based on the highest spending tier reached during the promo period, so you cannot stack multiple tiers together. Any shopping site that earns miles through the Portal is participating, but whether a specific merchant qualifies depends on the terms listed in the Portal. If you want to compare earning rates across different portals, you can use Cashback Monitor for a quick comparison.
