Today I want to share a "new investing tool" that every U.S. stock investor should learn in 2026: options. They’re widely discussed across Reddit, X, and Discord, and Robinhood also treats them as an important category (although after actually using it, I don’t think its options features are very good; for details, see my earlier review article). Used well, options can not only give you built-in leverage for stock trading and let you do more with less, but can also serve as a risk-management tool—essentially "insuring" your stocks so you’re less exposed when the market suddenly turns. In this practical guide, I’ll teach you the theory + tools in 5 minutes!

How can options help you "do more with less"?
Let’s use the hottest stock around, Nvidia, for two of the simplest examples, and you’ll get it right away. Note: The underlying securities and prices below are for educational demonstration only. They are not financial or investment advice and do not reflect actual current market conditions.
Scenario 1: "Turn $1,000 into $9,000" (buying calls for efficient upside exposure)
For example, suppose Nvidia is currently at $180, but I’m bullish long term and think it can rise to $280.
- Regular approach (buying shares): I’d need to spend $18,000 to buy 100 shares. The cost is too high and ties up a lot of capital.
- Options approach (buying a call option): You spend only $1,000 to buy one "contract" (100 shares, with an exercise date of January 20, 2026). This contract says that no matter how high the stock goes by January 20, 2026, you still have the right to buy at $180. If the stock rises to $280 by then, my profit would be (280-180)*100-1000=9000
With just $1,000 in principal, you get the possibility of making $9,500! That’s the appeal of options.
Scenario 2: Put "insurance" on the stocks you already own (buying puts so a drop doesn’t hurt as much)
Suppose you already own Nvidia stock, but there may be negative news coming that could push the share price lower.
- Hedging approach (buying a put option): You spend $1,000 to buy one put option. If the stock really crashes, your shares may lose money, but the value of that put option could surge, helping offset your stock losses. That’s the real power of spending a small amount to solve a big problem.
Scenario 3: Building a position at a lower price
Let’s say Nvidia is currently trading at 178 bucks, and the stock market hasn’t been doing well lately. You want to start a position, but you’re not sure how much further Nvidia could fall, so you sell a put option on Nvidia with a 170 strike price expiring next week, the week after, or a few weeks later. Note: sell, not buy. As soon as you do, you immediately receive several hundred to several thousand dollars in option premium.
- If Nvidia doesn’t fall to 170 by expiration, you pocket those several hundred dollars for free.
- If Nvidia falls below 170 by expiration, you may be assigned 100 shares of Nvidia stock per contract.
For example, Nvidia is currently at 178. You sell one 170-strike put expiring on 12.26, and the option premium is 2.05. The moment you sell it, you collect $205 in option premium. If Nvidia does not fall to 170 by 12.26, you keep that $205. But if Nvidia falls to 168 on 12.26, then you will be assigned and required to buy 100 shares of Nvidia at 170. Even though you lose $200 on the stock, you make $205 from the option.
Recommended options trading platform: easy to start, cost-effective, and beginner-friendly
So after all that, is there actually a good options trading platform to use?
Yes. For options beginners, the most important thing is a simple, intuitive interface—not something overly complicated. Ideally, you want to be able to place options trades with just a few taps, without having to overthink everything. That’s why I have to mention Moomoo, which I’ve been using consistently.
Reason #1: Beginner-friendly—new users can build strategies and choose contracts
Moomoo’s options strategy feature can generate a corresponding options strategy with one click as long as you have a directional view. Profit/loss and probability are all clearly displayed.
Let’s stick with Nvidia. For example, if we believe Nvidia will rise to 250 in the future, then in Moomoo’s options strategy feature, you can select "strongly bullish" and set a target price of 250, and it will automatically generate the matching options strategy for you. You can basically "copy the homework," and it clearly lays out both the potential profit and the potential loss.
If you’re not sure whether the current price of an options contract is worth buying, you can also evaluate it with Moomoo’s options calculator. Based on historical data, the system automatically estimates a reasonable theoretical price, eliminating the need for complicated tools and helping you judge whether it’s overpriced or underpriced—so you can more accurately "buy low and sell high."
Reason #2: Real-time unusual activity alerts so you don’t miss profit opportunities
Options moves can be gone in an instant, so timing your entry matters a lot. Moomoo’s "unusual options activity" feature can track large, unusual options trades in real time and help us quickly understand where the so-called "smart money" may be positioning.
For example, here we can see that for a certain stock’s call option expiring on December 12 with a target price of 190, more than 500,000 in large capital flowed in on the buy side, suggesting that "smart money" believes the stock could break above 190 before the 12th.
Reason #3: AI built for trading—your investing assistant
Moomoo AI is also connected to real-time financial data, integrating multidimensional signals such as trending events, whale positions, and candlestick charts to quickly extract useful information. You don’t have to grind through dense research reports, and even beginners can make sense of the investment logic.
When you’re not sure what to do with a stock’s options, you can ask the AI directly. For example, here we can ask, "What options strategies are available for Nvidia recently?" It will combine Nvidia’s recent stock trend and hot market information to give you options strategies in different directions for reference, helping you organize your investing ideas. Even if you’re a complete beginner with options, it’s easy to understand.
Reason #4: 0 commission on trades—a must if you want to save money
Last but also very important: with options trading, you also need to pay close attention to platform commissions + trading fees. Right now, Moomoo not only offers 0 commission + 0 contract fees on options trading (putting it in the top tier among mainstream platforms), which can help us save a substantial amount of money on options trades and "win at the starting line," but in actual use its options tools are also much better than Robinhood’s. For example, Robinhood does not offer the automatic strategy builder, unusual activity data, AI, and other features mentioned above.

About Moomoo
After using it for a while, I found that Moomoo is not only strong in options trading and low fees, but also highly capable in stock trading and digital asset trading. If you’re interested not just in options but also in trading U.S. stocks, ETFs, crypto, and other assets, Moomoo’s capabilities in these areas are also worth a look.
It has already accumulated more than 28 million users globally, across more than 200 countries and regions, and it holds financial licenses and qualifications in multiple markets around the world. It also supports real-time Chinese-language news updates and 24-hour Chinese customer service.
0 commission and 0 subscription fee for stock/ETF/IPO subscriptions! Historical IPO subscription success rate: 100%
Trading U.S. stocks, ETFs, and IPO subscriptions on Moomoo comes with no commissions or subscription fees. Canadian users can also enjoy 0 FX conversion fees plus real-time settlement, so small trades won’t have their returns “eaten up” by fees. It also supports fractional-share trading for U.S. stocks, so you can buy less than 1 share and easily get into high-priced blue-chip names without worrying about rounding up to a whole share. Another noteworthy point: there is no lock-up period after participating in IPO subscriptions on Moomoo once the stock is listed. Historically, Moomoo IPO winners such as Bullish and Gemini had a 100% allocation rate on Moomoo, so maybe this bit of “mystical” luck is worth having on your side!
If you’re interested, you can complete account opening and funding ahead of time, so when a promising IPO comes along, you’ll still have time to subscribe. The IPO subscription window is usually only 2-3 days, and users in the U.S., Singapore, and some HK users can participate.

Wide Crypto Selection, More Flexibility Across Platforms
When it comes to cryptocurrency trading, Moomoo is also ahead of the curve:
1. Full coverage of major coins: it now supports 60+ mainstream cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), SOL, Ripple (XRP), Dogecoin (DOGE), and even Binance Coin (BNB);
2. Crypto deposits and withdrawals are coming soon: support for crypto transfers in and out will be rolled out gradually, making it easier to move assets across platforms with greater flexibility and convenience.
Professional Data for Free, 24-Hour Trading Without Staying Up All Night
Features like Level 2 real-time quotes and Morningstar data are paid features on many other platforms, but on Moomoo they are all free, which can save us quite a bit on investing costs. It also automatically organizes changes in institutional and insider holdings, and can even track the positions of major figures such as Warren Buffett and Nancy Pelosi, so you don’t have to dig through data yourself.
Moomoo also supports 5×24 order placement, so you can place orders in pre-market and after-hours sessions, and it offers 13 order types such as trailing stop and OCO. That makes it easier to automate your trading, so even people with day jobs don’t have to stay up late watching the market.
Overall Conclusion
Moomoo has long been my go-to platform for U.S. stocks. Its core strengths are “zero commissions + strong features + one-stop global investing + Chinese-friendly support.” In this review, I also found its options trading features simple and easy to use, with 0 commission as well. It works well both for beginners trying options for the first time and for more advanced traders who want full data access, better tools, more complex trading strategies, and a wider variety of order types. That means you don’t have to switch platforms once you outgrow the basics, which, as far as I know, is a problem that often comes up with Robinhood. And of course, if you’re Chinese-speaking, Moomoo’s Chinese-language news and customer service are a major plus.

If you calculate the equivalent annualized yield on the first $20,000 for those 60 days, it comes out to 8.1%+2%*6=20.1%, which is pretty remarkable. The remaining $30,000 still earns 16%. If you don’t have that much capital, depositing $2,000 to get $50 in stock rewards plus $100 in stock coupons is also a solid option.
