Starting in April this year, Canada dropped its pre-entry PCR testing requirement, taking another step toward a return to normal travel to Canada for U.S. residents. In addition, on April 6, Canada quietly published a regulatory amendment in the Canada Gazette that exempts U.S. green card holders from the requirement to apply for an eTA.
Updated regulation
- U.S. permanent residents have been added to the list of travelers exempt from eTA registration;
- Any existing eTAs held by U.S. permanent residents were automatically canceled on April 26, 2022.
As a result, whether you are flying to Canada or entering by land, if you are a U.S. permanent resident, you no longer need to register for an eTA or pay the $7 fee. If you now try to apply on the eTA website, you will get an error message saying that an eTA is not required.
