Overview
At 12 PM ET on 8/10, the US Mint will release two limited-edition coins. If you are able to buy them and resell them to PFS buyers club, you can earn $145.05 in profit while also putting $514.95 of spend on your credit card, which can help toward a welcome bonus.
How Buying and Reselling Limited-Edition US Mint Coins Works
The US Mint (https://www.usmint.gov/) occasionally releases limited-edition commemorative coins. Because the supply is limited, some collectors who want them may not be able to buy them at launch and are willing to pay more than the original sale price. That can push the resale value above the issue price. If you can successfully buy a limited-edition coin right when it is released, you may be able to resell it at a higher price for a profit.
Usually, one or two days before a coin release, professional buyback platforms will publish the prices they are willing to pay for the new coins. We buy the coins ourselves and then forward them to the platform to complete the transaction. The general process looks like this:
- Find a platform in advance and lock in the buyback price.
- At release time, buy the limited-edition coin from the US Mint website.
- Forward your order confirmation email to the platform.
- After the coin arrives at your home, ask the platform for a pre-paid shipping label (usually with insurance), then ship the coin to the platform.
- Once the platform receives the coin, it sends payment to you.
Your upside as the buyer comes from credit card rewards on the purchase spend, which can also help you meet minimum spending requirements for a card bonus, plus the spread between the platform's buyback price and the US Mint sale price.
About the Buyback Platform
PFS Buyers Club is a well-regarded platform that has been buying commemorative coins for a long time. It is often mentioned by major blogs before limited-edition coin releases (for example, in articles from FrequentMiler and in the comments on DOC). PFS Buyers Club may not always offer the highest buyback price, but readers who have never bought and resold Mint coins before may want to start with a relatively reputable platform like PFS Buyers Club to get familiar with the process. After you have done it a few times and decide to keep participating in these deals, you can then decide whether to continue selling to PFS Buyers Club.
Using PFS Buyers Club as an example, the overall process is as follows:
- First, sign up for PFS Buyers Club (click here to join). After registering, go to the website, find the Current Deal, and click Opt-in at the bottom of the page to join this round.
- Next, create an account with the US Mint (US Mint). Be sure to add your payment credit card, billing address, and shipping address before the sale begins. At launch time, there will be a lot of buyers and the website may lag, so having this information saved in advance can help you check out faster and improve your chances of getting the limited-edition coin.
- After completing the purchase and receiving the confirmation email (the second email sent after purchase), enter your order number into PFS Buyers Club.
- After you receive the coin, do not open the package. Use the Pre-paid shipping label provided by PFS Buyers Club to forward the package to PFS Buyers Club.
- After PFS Buyers Club receives the package, it will send you the profit plus your cost back within a few business days.
Note: When choosing a platform/company to resell commemorative coins to, pay attention to whether it issues tax forms. Some platforms/companies do, while others do not. For additional tax questions, please consult a qualified tax professional.
Extra Tip (Free Shipping)
After creating your US Mint account in step 2 above, go to “Communication Preferences” as shown below, check “Product & Promotion Updates,” and then click “Apply All Updates.” If you complete 3 purchases with the US Mint during the calendar year, you will later receive an email from the US Mint stating that all remaining purchases for that year will qualify for free shipping ($4.95). That means your profit on each future order can increase by $4.95.
Risks
I have already made several purchases this year myself, with the largest one being $5,000 in limited-edition coins. Many major blogs, including DOC and FreequentMiler, have shared this coin-buying opportunity, and PFS buyers club is also a fairly reputable buyback platform, so there is at least some level of reassurance. That said, this involves buying merchandise and reselling it to a platform, so there is definitely transaction risk involved. The dollar amounts can also be substantial. Please assess the risks for yourself. Disclaimer: This post is for informational sharing only. Please proceed carefully. We assume no responsibility.
Summary
Buying US Mint commemorative coins and reselling them to a buyback platform such as PFS Buyers Club can be a relatively low-time way to generate large credit card spend and earn a solid profit. Successfully participating in the 8/10 deal at 12 PM can generate $510 in credit card spend (or $514.95 if you do not have free shipping), and reselling to PFS buyers club can earn you $150 in profit (or $145.05 if you do not have free shipping). There is risk in any transaction, so please judge for yourself. For your first time, PFS Buyers Club may be a good platform to use. Click here to join.
