According to a report by Lianhe Zaobao, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced in a recent public speech that starting in March this year, Thailand and China will implement a permanent mutual visa-free arrangement. In September last year, the Thai government had already announced a five-month visa-free policy for Chinese tourists to help revive tourism. However, in late August last year, Srettha noted that the process for Chinese travelers to apply for a Thai tourist visa was cumbersome and expensive, resulting in fewer visitors than expected. As a result, this mutual visa-free decision should provide a more convenient travel experience for Chinese tourists.
Current Temporary Visa-Free Policy
According to an official announcement from the Thai government, from September 25, 2023, through February 29, 2024, Chinese tourists staying no more than 30 days are eligible for a temporary visa-free tourist entry policy. This means travelers holding Chinese passports can enter Thailand during the validity period of the visa-free policy without applying for a tourist visa. The visa validity period is three months for single-entry visas or 12 months for multiple-entry visas, with each stay not exceeding 60 days. Upon entry, travelers must carry cash or equivalent foreign currency worth 20,000 Thai baht per person or 40,000 Thai baht per family as proof of travel funds.
