About SFCU

You can open the account online directly. In-person account opening is only available at the Palo Alto and Stanford branches. Please note that if you are outside CA, you must enter a referral code in order for the application to be approved! In other words, once you enter it, it works nationwide.

Non-California residents can choose to join Friends of Palo Alto Library (FOPAL), with the annual fee donated by SFCU. The account opening verification uses Chex, and multiple DPs show it is generally okay; as long as you haven’t opened more than a dozen accounts in a year, you should be fine. ITIN works, and there are successful DPs, but you will need to provide proof of address afterward (California address is best).

Opening bonuses

Stanford Federal Credit Union offers the following new-account bonuses:

  • $500 bonus: Open the account, complete Direct Deposit, and complete debit card spending
  • $120 bonus: Complete various small tasks, and it is not hard in practice. (Details below.)
  • New users get 3 free months of Ambassador, with benefits including free ATM, 1% discount on loans, 0.5% bonus interest on CDs, and more. We especially recommend its auto loans here; multiple DPs show that they are among the lower-rate auto loans in California, so you can give them a try.
  • Refer family and friends, and you can receive a $250-750 referral bonus.
  • $500 credit card funding: You can fund the account with a credit card during account opening, which can also be used toward the card spend requirement.

$500 opening bonus

The basic $500 opening bonus has three requirements:

  • Open an Everyday High Yield or student spending account
  • Direct Deposit for 3 consecutive months, at least $2,500 per month (the first deposit must arrive within 30 days).
  • [New] Spend $1,000 per month using an SFCU debit card or credit card for three consecutive months

The DD requirement is relatively difficult and hard to fake. It is best to use actual payroll deposits (change the receiving account with your company’s payroll department).

The new debit spending requirement is also quite troublesome. You can consider paying taxes in advance, paying property taxes, utility bills, buying money orders, loading a Walmart One card, and so on. You can also try Robinhood reloads, Apple Cash reloads, etc. You can also use Snaplii to buy third-party gift cards or Visa gift cards and earn extra cashback.

Small tasks for card opening ($120 bonus)

Complete all of them to get the $120 bonus.

  • * - Register for the mobile app and deposit one check *
  • - Send one transfer via Zelle *   - Set up alerts *
  • - Set up e-statements *
  • - Open a new Savings or CD account (deposit at least $1,000; the bonus posts quickly, and you can transfer the funds out after it arrives)
  • * - Use the debit card 5 times*

* Refer family and friends, and you can receive a $250-750 referral bonus.

$500 credit card funding

One of the best parts of this account is that during account opening, you can fund the account with a credit card for up to $500. This counts as regular credit card spending, so you can earn cashback and satisfy the card-opening bonus requirements.

Step 5: Identity verification. A link will be sent to your phone, and then you will need to scan your ID.

Step 6: Fill in more information. At this point, enter Referral code: F6U2O9I; no promo code is needed.

Step 7: After submitting the application, experiences vary. Some people were approved immediately without any further requests. In my case, I received an email asking me to upload identity documents. I uploaded payroll and a bank statement (utility bills are also fine, as long as they show your address). It was approved quickly after upload. LD was not asked for payroll, but was asked to do a Zoom verification, and was also approved immediately after identity verification.

  4. There are DPs of successful out-of-state online applications.
  5. Fake DD is not recommended. So far, there are failed DPs with Chase and Charles Schwab.

  7. After a successful application, you need to wait one business day before the new-user bonus page appears.
