【Updated 2021.11】AMEX-issued cards now have an offer too, but it’s only spend $15, get $5 back, up to two times. Meanwhile, non-AMEX-issued cards can get a free $50 instead. A very puzzling move.

Get $5 back 2 times (AMEX-issued cards)

This offer can be found on cards issued by AMEX: spend $15 and get $5 back, up to two times. This deal is pretty small, and once you add it to one card, the same offer disappears from your other cards. The expiration date is December 31.

If you don’t see it, you can try the following steps:

  • Pick any AMEX card you rarely use, and add all the AMEX Offers you don’t want to that card instead. Once added, those offers will disappear from your other cards.
  • Log out and log back in, then check whether this offer appears on your other cards.
  • Add the offer to the card you actually want to use.

In addition, there is another shopsmall-related offer for purchases at this AMEX-designated merchant, Showfields: spend $20 and get $15 back. It looks like they mostly sell souvenirs, so there doesn’t seem to be much value here.

Get $10 back 5 times (non-AMEX-issued cards)

This offer appears to be available only on cards not issued by AMEX, but that still run on the AMEX network.

AMEX has released a Shop Small offer to some users. At eligible AMEX-designated Small Business merchants, each purchase of $10 or more earns $10 back, up to 5 times total. You must enroll by December 31, meaning you need to add the offer to your card before your purchases will qualify. One especially important point: with these AMEX Offer-like deals, accounts under the same SSN can add the offer to only one card. In other words, once you add this offer to one card, it will disappear from the others. So choose the card you use most often or the one with the best rewards return.

I reviewed the terms carefully and pulled out some of the more important details:

  • Only U.S.-issued cards are eligible. Purchases of cash equivalents are excluded, including purchases or reloading of prepaid Cards and purchases of any cash equivalents.
  • Each person can add the offer to only one card. If you have authorized user cards, those can enroll in this offer separately and do not conflict with the primary card. Purchases on an authorized user card trigger that authorized user card’s own offer.
  • The $5 Credit will post to your account within 90 days, though based on how AMEX Offers usually work, it generally appears 2-3 business days after the charge posts.

How to use it

AMEX provides a list of eligible merchants, and you can use the offer for both online and in-store purchases.

After you go in and apply filters, you can see participating merchants.

At the moment, after a quick look, I haven’t found many broadly useful merchants for this deal. If you want to use it at restaurants, check the map to see whether any nearby restaurants are participating.
