Because Shanghai is currently under strict COVID controls, it has become much harder to obtain a COVID test result within one day. At the request of the U.S. Department of State, the CDC announced on April 15 that:
The following travelers going from Shanghai to the United States do not need to provide a COVID antigen or PCR test, and also do not need to provide proof of recovery from COVID:
- U.S. citizens
- U.S. nationals
- U.S. permanent residents
- People holding a valid immigrant visa
- People traveling with a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who are permitted to enter the United States
This policy is currently in effect through May 11. The U.S. Department of State will continue reviewing the situation to decide whether the policy will be extended.
Even so
At this time, leaving Shanghai still requires a PCR test result taken within 48 hours. Do not assume the PCR testing requirement has been completely waived.
