Grand Hyatt Shanghai is located in Shanghai’s Lujiazui financial district, inside the 420.5-meter Jin Mao Tower, one of the city’s landmark buildings. The hotel is themed around an Art Deco style, blending Shanghai’s history, culture, and modern elements to showcase the city’s distinctive charm. The hotel has 555 guest rooms and suites. Among them, the Diplomat Suite is one of the hotel’s premium suites, located on a high floor and offering a spacious 110 square meters, including a living room, bedroom, walk-in closet, and work area for a comfortable and convenient stay.
The Diplomat Suite is elegant and opulent in design, with dark wood tones and gold accents creating a refined yet cozy atmosphere. Its floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows let guests take in spectacular views of Shanghai, including the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Huangpu River, and the Bund, capturing the city’s energy and vibrancy.

In my view, this is one of the best double-height ceilings among hotels in China.
On the day of check-in, I was deciding among the City View Suite, River View Suite, and Diplomat Suite. After the front desk staff walked me through each one, I ultimately chose the Diplomat Suite. (Most unbelievably, the River View Suite I saw had basically no river view at all, so I had to rule it out.)
First, take a look at the floor plan.
Stay Experience
The door to this premium suite is different from the other room types, and room 7919 next door is the connecting room for the Diplomat Suite.
As soon as you enter, there’s a foyer. To the right are the wet bar and living room; to the left are the guest bathroom and walk-in closet. The entire space flows together in one large circular layout.
To the right is the wet bar. One thing worth mentioning: despite the expensive room rate, even the minibar didn’t include any drinks or snacks. Even the base suite next door at Andaz includes those.
The living room is enormous, fully deserving of the name of a 110-square-meter Diplomat Suite in the clouds.
The daytime views are unbeatable.
The Oriental Pearl Tower really feels close enough to touch.
Next is the bedroom, where you can see the Huangpu River and the glittering Bund right from the bed.
Back to the foyer: head left, and the first thing you see is a wall-mounted coat rack built into the wall.
Directly across from the coat rack is the guest bathroom.
Further in, there’s a luggage cabinet and the walk-in closet.
Past the closet, the primary bathroom is on the right.
The primary bathroom also includes a small vanity.
A thoughtful touch: mouthwash is provided next to the sink.
And now for one of my classic observations: the integrated shower-and-tub setup perfectly solves the awkward problem of having to walk over dripping wet after a shower to get into the bathtub.
A walk-in bathtub?
The bath amenities are all from Guerlain, and they’re excellent. I normally use Kérastase shampoo, which tends to make my hair too fluffy, but the Guerlain products left my hair very smooth and well-behaved. I ended up taking 3 sets of the amenities with me. Does anyone who knows these products have a sense of how much this 55ml-per-bottle Guerlain amenity set is worth?
Because it was my lunar birthday, the hotel also gifted me a persimmon cake. It tasted excellent and wasn’t overly sweet—about the highest praise someone from Wuxi can give.
Final Thoughts
Although the hotel opened in 1999, based on my overall experience, it’s absolutely a Grand Hyatt worth checking out. There’s a Grand Club lounge, the views are fantastic, and the service is warm and attentive (after all, they showed me three different rooms without getting impatient). The only downside is the somewhat low ceiling height, which might make a standard room feel a little cramped. If the budget were about the same, would you choose a room at The Upper House or a suite at the Grand Hyatt?
