On March 21, 2022, a China Eastern Boeing 737 passenger plane lost contact over Wuzhou while operating a Kunming–Guangzhou flight. It has now been confirmed that the aircraft crashed. There were 132 people on board, including 123 passengers and 9 crew members. The Civil Aviation Administration has activated its emergency response mechanism and dispatched a working team to the scene.
A villager surnamed Liu from Molang Village, Langnan Town, Teng County, Guangxi, said in a phone interview with China News Service at 17:00 on the 21st that after the accident happened, he and three other villagers rode motorcycles to the scene. They saw aircraft wings and debris at the site, with large amounts of cloth strips hanging from trees. He said that at around 14:40 that day, after hearing a huge explosion in the village, he immediately rode a motorcycle to the crash site to see whether he could help with rescue efforts. After a three- to four-minute ride, he arrived at the scene but did not see any victims' bodies. Based on his visual estimate, the mountain fire caused by the crash covered about 10 mu.
Flight data shows that after Flight MU5735 took off from Kunming Airport, it had been cruising at an altitude of about 8,869 meters. At 2:19 p.m., the plane suddenly descended from cruising altitude, while its speed also began dropping from about 845 kilometers per hour. At 2:21 p.m., Flight MU5735 lost its ADS-B radar signal and contact with the ground.
According to Upstream News, the MU5735 flight on March 21 was operated by a China Eastern Yunnan Company Boeing 737, aircraft registration B-1791, with an aircraft age of 6.8 years. The flight was originally scheduled to depart Kunming Changshui Airport at 13:10 and arrive at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport at 15:05. However, after taking off at 13:15, the aircraft lost contact with the ground at around 14:20.
Reporters learned from the Teng County Emergency Management Bureau in Guangxi that the forest fire triggered by the China Eastern passenger plane crash has now been extinguished. Rescue forces from various departments are urgently carrying out search and rescue operations.
At present, the first group of 117 firefighting and rescue personnel from Guangxi has arrived at the crash site in Wuzhou, and a frontline search-and-rescue command center has been established on site. Guangxi Fire and Rescue has now mobilized 650 personnel, heading to the Teng County site from three directions to carry out search and rescue work.
