After American Express obtained approval to issue RMB credit cards in mainland China [Reference 1; Reference 2], it has recently been pushing out AMEX RMB credit cards aggressively. In addition to the previous “Yaohong Card” and “Life+ Card”, it has also recently launched the “AMEX Gold” with China CITIC Bank and the “AMEX Safari” with Ping An Bank.

The “AMEX Safari” offers up to 1,000 RMB in overseas spending cashback per month (1%), carries a non-waivable 1,800 RMB annual fee for the first year, and allows points redemption against the fee starting in the second year. This card is actually quite strong. If you have a lot of USD-denominated spending (but have RMB, not USD), this card can help you earn a substantial amount of cashback back (up to 12,000 RMB in cashback per year if fully maximized).

My guess is that the existing co-branded AMEX USD single-currency or dual-currency credit cards will gradually be replaced by RMB credit cards in the future. One thing to note is that AMEX USD credit cards issued in China can still add AMEX Offers through AMEX Connect. So if you like using AMEX Offers, you may want to open a few for backup before they disappear.
