United Airlines has quietly upgraded its MileagePlus Pooling feature. Under the latest terms, members can now use pooled miles not only for United-operated flights, but also to book award tickets on a number of partner airlines. MileagePlus Pooling launched in 2024 and was the first program among the three major U.S. legacy airlines to let family members and friends share miles. Until now, pooled miles were limited to flights operated by United and United Express. That restriction has now officially been lifted.

Which partners have been added?

Pooled miles can now be used to redeem select award flights on the following partners:

  • Air Canada
  • ANA
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Lufthansa
  • SWISS
  • Turkish Airlines
  • EVA Air
  • TAP Air Portugal
  • Air New Zealand
  • Thai Airways
  • Air India
  • Copa Airlines
  • Brussels Airlines
  • Austrian Airlines
  • South African Airways
  • LOT Polish Airlines
  • Shenzhen Airlines
  • and other Star Alliance and non-alliance partners

The full list includes more than 40 airlines and covers most of the MileagePlus partner network. For people who frequently redeem international business-class and first-class award tickets, this is clearly welcome news.

Some partners still have restrictions

A few airlines still have extra limits:

  • Hawaiian Airlines: redemption is limited to inter-island flights within Hawaii
  • Emirates: currently only available on select routes between Newark (EWR) and Dubai (DXB)

Whether these restrictions will be expanded further remains to be seen.

How does MileagePlus Pooling work?

MileagePlus members can create a Miles Pool for free:

  • The primary account holder must be at least 18 years old
  • Up to 4 other members can be invited
  • Family members, friends, and even child accounts can participate
  • Once miles are transferred into the pool, they can be used jointly
  • There is no limit on the number of miles that can be transferred

However, only miles can be shared:

  • Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) cannot be shared
  • TravelBank balances cannot be shared

Be aware of the waiting periods

The feature is very useful, but there are some time restrictions:

  • New members must wait 72 hours before they can contribute or use miles
  • All transferred miles must wait 24 hours before they can be used for ticketing
  • Transfers can be reversed within 24 hours
  • FareLock is not currently supported for holding award tickets

For popular routes, the 24-hour waiting period can mean award space disappears, so it’s best to plan ahead.

Holding a United co-branded credit card helps even more

Earlier this year, United adjusted its MileagePlus award ticket program. Some United co-branded credit cardholders can now receive an exclusive award discount (Cardmember Award Discount). If you book using pooled miles:

  • Booking from the cardholder’s account can qualify for the cardholder-only discount
  • If the booking is made by a non-cardholder, the discount is not available

For a family miles pool, the best approach is usually to have the member with a United co-branded credit card handle the booking.

MileagePlus Pooling has already been one of United’s most popular new features in recent years. Opening up partner-airline redemptions makes it even more useful. For families with miles scattered across multiple MileagePlus accounts, it is now much easier to combine them and book award tickets on popular partners such as ANA, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, and EVA Air. Just be sure to pay attention to the 24-hour and 72-hour waiting rules so you do not transfer miles only to find that the award space you wanted has already disappeared. For travelers who frequently use MileagePlus for international flights, this upgrade is definitely worth paying attention to.
